Chapter 4

Julian's gaze turned even colder. I removed my sunglasses and stepped forward from the side of the room. "Are you trying to ruin my reputation with that claim? A man is responsible for what he says." When Adrian saw me, he spat out a mouthful of blood and crawled in my direction. "Evelyn! Evelyn, I know you came back too! Tell them you were my wife in our last life!" I burst out laughing. "Did they beat you senseless, Mr. Bennett? "If I remember correctly, wasn't my stepsister your destined soulmate? You traveled all the way south to bring Chloe back, and you've forgotten her already?" Relief washed over Adrian's face. "I knew you were only angry about Chloe. But the jade whistle proved it. You aren't my destined soulmate. Chloe is!" The absurdity of it made me laugh again. As it happened, my stepsister had come to the Bennett estate looking for Adrian. Her face went several shades paler when she saw the bloodstained scene. I walked over, tore the jade whistle from his neck, and shook it hard in front of Chloe. Before Adrian's eyes, the whistle remained completely silent. The blood drained from his face. "Impossible... That's impossible..." He must have been in such a hurry to find his "destined soulmate" in this life that he had not yet tested the whistle. I had known since our first life that the heirloom was defective. It could not make a sound at all. Adrian's mother simply had not wanted me in the family. She was afraid I might reveal that her son had been born sterile. Her plan had always been for Adrian to marry a girl from her own side of the family. What she never expected was that I would truly wait for him for years or willingly endure the stigma of infertility to protect his secret. On the day of our engagement party, an assistant mistakenly handed him the wrong whistle. He wore an ordinary working one to the restaurant. And that ordinary whistle rang in front of Chloe. Adrian remembered that single note across 2 lifetimes. Disbelief twisted his face. He struggled to his feet, staggered over, and snatched the jade whistle away. But no matter how violently he shook it in front of Chloe, the defective whistle stayed mute. I laughed until tears ran down my cheeks. Pretending to be helpful, Julian asked the specialist to take a look at Adrian's head. The specialist gave Adrian a preliminary examination, and his expression changed abruptly. Adrian's mother forgot all the decorum and shoved him away. "Get out! Get out!" she shrieked wildly. "You all came here to hurt my son!" She trembled from head to toe and broke out in a cold sweat, terrified and desperate. "Mrs. Bennett, are you refusing to let the doctor examine him because you're afraid everyone will discover that your son was born sterile?" When I said it before, people dismissed the accusation as a bitter curse. But now I was Mrs. Carter. My words carried weight. People would believe most of what I said. Adrian angrily pushed his agitated mother aside. "Mom, move. Let the doctor examine me! Then Evelyn can't blame me for her own infertility. I have nothing to hide!" He was desperate to humiliate me in front of everyone. Unfortunately for him, he failed to notice the ashen look on his mother's face. The specialist examined him again. After a long moment, he straightened and looked hesitantly at Julian. "Well..." Julian waved a hand. "Speak freely." "Mr. Bennett's examination points to a congenital reproductive disorder. I'm afraid he is unlikely ever to father a child, and current medical treatments cannot correct the condition..."
