Six months had passed since the doctor had confirmed that Annabelle was indeed pregnant.
The doctor had order full bed rest due to her delicate situation after she had been shot in the stomach. They didn't want to risk her losing the baby.
"Mommy?" Layla asked as she came into the bedroom, "can you come sit and do puzzles with me?"
"Of course I can," she responded.
Layla helped her off the bed and down to the living room. "Rosy, can you make mummy some tea, please? I'm too small yet," she asked.
"Yes, Miss Layla," Rosy responded.
Trish came into the living room. "I'm sorry, Mrs Hemmingway," Trish apologised, "she didn't want to take no for an answer."
"Trish, it's okay, really. Come sit and have a cup of tea and help us with the puzzle. Mr Hemmingway will be a little later tonight," she said.
Camilla was in her own place writing her book, Love Prevails, while Bradford had gone with Morgan and Lloyd over to the hospital. They were talking about expanding and adding other medical facilities.
Even though Morgan had taken over. Bradford still liked to dabble in the works. It gave him a sense of purpose when Camila was writing. They had planned on a trip to Malta, but only once the baby was born and they knew that Annabelle was settled.
Morgan and Bradford arrived home. Rosy had finished preparing dinner, so the family all sat in and dining room.
It was around 8 p.m., Annabelle had gone to the bathroom for a shower when she slipped, bumping her stomach on the basin top. Letting out a scream, Morgan rushed into the bathroom. Annabelle lay on the floor, blood trickled down her leg.
"Trish," he bellowed.
Trish came running up the stairs. "Mr Hemming -" she paused, seeing Annabelle on the floor. I'll get Mr Hemmingway Senior."
Bradford and Camilla were there in a shot, "Look after Layla. We'll update you later," Camilla instructed as Morgan and Bradford rushed Annabelle to the car.
Camilla, Bradford, and Morgan gently eased her into the car as Denzil drove them to the hospital.
"Marshall, can you accommodate Annabelle?" Camilla asked.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
Camilla explained to him. "Bring her in. I'll call her doctor to meet her here. Wythenshawe is too far in her condition," he said.
They drove to Macclesfield Hospital, where Danielle, her uncle, and their doctor were awaiting Annabelle.
Danielle's cousin was an OBGYN and well aware of Annabelle's condition. Putting her on the stretcher, they wheeled her into an examination room. Morgan followed behind.
"I can't lose the baby," she cried.
Hooking Annabelle up to various machines, the nurse shouted, "Her B P is dropping!"
"We need to move now!" Danielle's uncle ordered with urgency.
"Annabelle, it's me, your sister-in-law, and this is my cousin,Dr Appleton. Your doctor is on the way. You will be fine," she spoke soothingly to her.
"Marshall, take Morgan and your parents to the cafeteria for coffee while we examine Annabelle," she instructed her husband.
"Just save them please," Morgan begged.
"She will be fine, trust me okay, she is strong and will pull through this," Danielle consoled him.
Lloyd and Meghan arrived shortly afterwards. "What's the prognosis?" Meghan asked.
"She's with the doctors now," Camilla said. Morgan half beside himself with anxiety.
"Relax, son, Annabelle is in good hands. She will be fine and the baby," Camilla calmed him down.
As they were drinking coffee, Marshall's beeper went off. "It's Danielle she needs us back."
Going back to the waiting area. Danielle spoke to them all. "We've managed to stabilise the bleeding for now. She will have to stay here for a few days to be monitored. She will have her own room, and my cousin will be around to keep an eye on her. He is a specialist in trauma pregnancies."
"Thank you, Dani," Morgan cried.
"You don't need to thank me, brother, we're family;" she expressed, hugging him.
"Can I go in?" he pleaded.
"You may. You can all go in, but keep it short she needs lots of rest and sleep right now," her gynae instructed.
They all stayed a short while.
"Mom, can you and dad take care of Layla?" Morgan asked.
"We will all care for her," Meghan pitched in.
"Bradford and I will go get her and come to your place," Camilla said to Meghan, "I know Marshall will want to be here with Morgan and Danielle also."
"Thank you mom and dad," he said hugging his parents.
One thing he could always be thankful for was that they were a close knit family and they were always there for each other no matter what.
As the night deepened, the hospital hallway grew quieter, except for the occasional beeping of a few machines and the distant shuffle of nurses making their rounds.
Morgan sat beside Annabelle’s bed, watching the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest gave him reassurance.
Marshall leaned against the doorframe, watching his brother. "She’s strong, Morgan. She’ll pull through this."
Morgan exhaled sharply, rubbing his hands down his face. "I thought I was going to lose them both," he admitted, his voice hoarse with emotion. "I keep playing it in my head, the way she screamed, the blood, God, I couldn't do anything."
Marshall stepped inside, placing a steadying hand on Morgan’s shoulder. "She made it through the first fight, and she’ll make it through this one too. You have to be strong for her."
A soft groan came from the bed. Annabelle’s eyelids fluttered open. "Morgan?" she murmured, her voice weak.
He was by her side instantly. "I’m here, kitten. I’m right here." He pressed a kiss to her forehead, lingering there as if willing his strength into her.
Her hand trembled slightly as she placed it over her belly. "Is the baby…?"
Morgan swallowed hard, as he held her hand. "The doctors managed to stop the bleeding. You and the baby are stable for now. But you need to rest!"
Tears welled in her eyes. "I was so scared," she whispered.
"I know kitten, so was I." He brushed his thumb over her knuckles. "But we’re not going to lose this fight."
Marshall arranged for a bed for Morgan and something for them to eat, before he and Danielle left the hospital.
"If you need anything just let the nurse know and they will beep us," Danielle said, "my cousin is on graveyard shift so he is also around and nurse Steward is here as well."
"You're going to be fine, I promise," she placed a gentle hand on Annabelle’s arm and placed the other hand, as a comforting gesture on Annabelle’s abdomen.
