CHAPTER SIX

Karen gasped like she’d just heard the juiciest gossip. "Hold on, Kate! I’ll take the drinks over to them myself! Pleeeease!" She whipped out the ultimate weapon: puppy eyes that sparkled like the last piece of chocolate. Katherine groaned, defeated. "Ugh, fine. Go. Although the four young men were known for their wealthy personalities and strong influence around the city, Katherine didn't want anything to do with them. The reason was that she was already in a relationship, and flirting with other men would fill her heart with guilt; beyond that, she felt a deep-seated distaste for those from wealthy backgrounds. She believes her mom lost her job because of the influence held by a powerful woman she had conflicts with. And her dad, despite working tirelessly every single day, was never paid what he truly deserved. So in a sense, she and her family were in this mess because of people like them. It doesn't actually make sense putting it like that, even to her, but it was the hard truth of the world, and the sooner people tend to realize it, the better. Karen studied the four young men awaiting their drinks before bringing it to them, she noticed that Reymond was slightly injured and covered in bandages. Her brow rose in confusion as she thought to herself,” Who dared lay their hands on my property.” As she approached them, she tried her very best to draw their attention, moving like a cat going on a fashion show. She sashayed in such a manner that made Kai, the lover boy, throw a few glances at her. On reaching their table, she smiled widely with flirty eyes and said, staring at them, “Hello everyone, welcome to CHARRED MIKE BLOSSOM’S BAR, “yeah, thanks,” Jason said, not even paying attention to her. “You have any idea where Ms. Kate may have gone, she was the one I was expecting to bring in the drinks,” Kai asked with a plain voice. “OMG!, they know her name already?” In a state of shock, Karen thought to herself, eyes beaming with a little jealousy, “Um, she went on some errands; she'll be back real soon, though; do you guys need anything else?” she asked. “Not at the moment; thanks a lot, though,” Kai spoke with a calm voice. On her way back to the kitchen, she murmured under her breath angrily, “They didn't even ask me for my name, jerks. *** Workers in hard hats and vests moved between steel frames and scaffolding while cranes swung heavy materials overhead. Bulldozers rumbled across packed dirt, and the air smelled of cement and metal. Stacks of concrete blocks, rebar, and wood are organized around the site and ready for use. The construction site was alive with noise and motion. Mr. Bennett(Katherine's Father) was done for the day, he had been living in a small apartment given to him by the company he was currently working for. As a contractor, he was given the best of hospitality and the highest pay; although it wasn't enough to call him rich, he was nowhere close to being called poor. “From the looks of it, we'll be done with this project in no time,” he announced to his workers, his tone encouraging. “Go get some sleep, we'll be up as early as 7 am tomorrow.” Mr Bennett spoke with authority. He has been stuck here for the last two months. He was given a project on road construction, and without having good equipment, the process had been very slow. Staring at his family’s picture frame in his room, Mr. Bennett muttered to himself, “You don't have to wait any longer, my darlings; daddy's coming soon.” The following day arrived, and the construction was not in any way faster than before, making progress bit by bit; they had come this far and would stop at nothing to get the whole work done before next month. “Christopher!” Mr. Bennett called out to a young worker in charge of making important calculations, “yes, Mr. Bennett, how may I be of help,” Christopher answered. "Hey, can you double-check the grade and slope on this stretch? Make sure it's within the specs we need before we finish up. And run the load calculations again, I want to be certain it holds up under heavy traffic. Let me know if anything looks off so we can adjust before the final inspection." Mr. Bennett responded. “No problem, sir, I'll be on it right away,” Christopher replied as he nodded curtly and walked away. “With this kind of pace, we all be out of here in no time,” Mr. Bennett whispered with a sigh of relief. On the contrary, Mr.Bennett was not planning on coming back to this life; although he was paid a considerable amount of money, it wasn't just worth not seeing his family. He just needed to save enough money to leave this plac e and start up a new life with his family in San Francisco.
