Chase’s POV
I felt empty. Being this far away from Lillian was killing me and then watching Pop Pop die made it even worse.
“Chase, I am so sorry to hear about your Pop Pop. We all loved him.”
I looked up to see Brooklyn the Alpha’s daughter standing in front of me. She was tall and pale with amazing brown eyes and black hair. She was a very pretty girl but nothing compared to my Lillian.
“Thanks Brooklyn.”
“You miss her, don’t you?”
“Like crazy. I feel like I made the worst decision to be here, but at the same time, I would have missed Pop Pop.”
Brooklyn was a year older than me and still had not found her mate. I can’t imagine it’s easy since they rarely leave the mountain top.
She sat down next to me and wrapped her arms around me.
Maybe it was me mourning my Pop Pop or maybe it was me missing Lillian, but I allowed her arms to stay wrapped around me.
Next thing I knew, her lips were on mine. In a moment of numbness, I started to kiss her back. I grabbed the back of her head and enjoyed the kiss.
It wasn’t until her hand found the top button of my jeans that I snap out of my daze.
I quickly pulled away and stood up.
“Fu$k! What the hell did I just do?” I raked my hand through my hair. I felt the panic rise up in me.
“It’s OK, Chase. I like it…We could be really good together.” Brooklyn said with a smile.
“Don’t you get it? I have a mate and I love her.”
“Well, it didn’t feel like you had a mate a minute ago.”
“This was a huge, huge mistake.”
“Don’t you want me?”
“No I don’t, I want Lillian.”
“Then why did you leave her? Cause if I ever find my mate I will never leave his side. Makes me think you are trying to convince yourself that it's what you want.”
“That’s not it at all. I just wanted her to find herself. She is 3 years younger than me and I want her to want us as much as I do.”
“Maybe you just wanted a woman and not a child. I could give you that.” She said with a smirk, standing and closing the distance between us.
“No Brooklyn, there will never be an us. Please just go.” I turned and walked to my room, slamming the door behind me.
What the hell was I supposed to do now? Did I tell Lillian the truth? At least I had 2 months to figure out what to do.
Liliian’s POV
It had been 4 months since I talked to Chase and I sat and waited in anticipation for his call. His parents returned from the funeral and told me he was going to be able to FaceTime me from the cafe in the town where they get supplies.
Here I was waiting in front of my Mac for him to call.
As soon as it did, I answered. Seeing his face again brought tears to my eyes immediately.
“Hey Baby. You look amazing. I miss you so much.” Chase said, smiling at me. But his smile didn’t reach his eyes.
“I miss you so much too. I have so much to tell you. But how are you? I am so sorry about Pop Pop.”
“I am doing better and I have really been helping Gram. She isn’t doing too good.”
“Oh, I can’t even imagine what it’s like to lose your mate.”
“Yeah.”
“Are you OK Chase? You seem off.”
“Oh um yeah.”
“So I can’t believe you will be home in a month!”
“Yeah I wanted to talk to you about that…..Gram is really bad and the pack doctor doesn’t think she will make it much longer. I plan to stay until she passes.”
I wasn’t sure what to say. I understood why he wanted to stay, but it made me feel like he didn’t really want me. Like he was trying to stay away from me.
“Oh OK, I understand.” Was all I could get out.
“Hey Babe, you almost done? I wanted to grab lunch before we had to head home.” Said a woman who made it a point to lean down to Chase and kiss his cheek.
“What the Fu$k Chase?”
“It’s not what you think, Lillian.” He turned to the woman next to him. “Brooklyn, what are you doing?”
“I wanted us to get lunch.” She said sweetly.
“Just get out of here.” Chase said, turning back to me.
“What the hell, Chase? Who is that woman and why is she kissing you and calling you baby?” I was pissed. I could feel my anger growing strong as I watched her walk away.
“She is just a friend and the daughter of an alpha.”
“That doesn’t explain the kiss or her calling you baby.”
“I don’t know why she did that…she knew I was talking to my mate.”
“Has anything happened between the two of you?”
He didn’t respond right away. I was praying he would immediately say no, but his silence told me something had happened.
“What did you do, Chase?”
“It was just a kiss….I immediately regretted it and pulled away.”
“You kissed her and you are still spending time with her.” I whispered as my heart completely broke. This was it. This was the end. It wasn’t about his family. He found a wolf his age to be with and I didn’t matter.
Actions speak louder than words.
“ It was a mistake and we are just friends.”
“Well, I hope she is worth it.”
“I am so sorry Lillian.”
“But you’re not and you know what… I'm done. Enjoy the Alpha’s daughter.”
I slammed my Mac shut and blocked his number. I knew Chase and he would be calling me back in a second and I was just done.
I was tired of feeling like I wasn’t good enough. From the time he told me he was leaving I became so afraid he would find somebody else and I was right.
I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself. I made my way to the art room my dad had set up for me. I let all of my pain out on the canvas.
About an hour later, my Mom showed up at the door.
“Hey Lillie, are you OK?”
“I’m fine mom.” I said without looking up from my painting.
“That’s beautiful Lil.” She said from behind me.
“Thanks, I think it’s one of my best pieces of work.” I said, looking at her finally.
“Chase called me.”
“So?”
“I know you are sad he is staying longer, honey, but you should talk about it.”
