Chapter 7: The Sovereign's Blood

1544 Words
The scent of ozone and burning silver scorched the back of Seraphina’s throat, replacing the static void of death with a searing, agonizing heat. Her chest heaved violently as her heart jump-started with the force of a detonating engine. She didn't wake up gradually; she shattered back into consciousness, her spine arching off the cold stone floor of the subterranean vault. Her internal monologue was a fractured mess of sensory overload. The absolute darkness pressed against her eyes, thick and suffocating, a stark contrast to the brilliant chandeliers of the opera house gala. She was no longer in the grand lobby. She was underground, stripped of her crimson armor, and the heavy iron collar fastened tightly around her neck pinned her to the obsidian altar. "Do not struggle, little bird," a smooth, unfamiliar voice echoed from the shadows. "The silver weave will only tighten if your pulse spikes." "Where is Valerius?" Seraphina choked out, her voice a raw rasp. She clawed at the iron collar, her nails scraping uselessly against the enchanted metal. The panic that had subsided during her brief transition through the void surged back with double the intensity. "What did Cassandra do to me?" "Lady Cassandra executed her right of inspection," the shadow replied, stepping into the dim radius of a single tallow candle. It was Evander, his eyes glowing a faint, predatory amber in the gloom, his hands stained with fresh, dark residue. "And you failed the metrics. Your human heart collapsed under a simple kinetic pulse. If my brother had not channeled his own life force through the contract bond to anchor your soul, you would currently be on a slab in the city morgue." He gave her Valerius's blood. The realization hit her like a physical blow, her internal monologue spinning as she felt the unnatural, thrumming rhythm beneath her ribs. It wasn't her own sluggish, failing heartbeat anymore. It was faster, heavier, a dark and dominant cadence that felt entirely alien. Valerius had bound her to him completely, utilizing the emergency clauses of the marriage contract to lock her mortality to his immortal core. She wasn't just his shield anymore; she was his extension. "He saved me," she whispered, a sickening mixture of gratitude and absolute revulsion curdling in her stomach. "Why?" "Because your death before the ninety-day threshold forfeits the Vance inheritance shield," Evander said, his smile sharp and entirely devoid of warmth. "Do not flatter yourself, human. He did not save your life because he cares for your fragile soul. He saved you because your corpse cannot sign the asset transfer documents at the end of the quarter. Now, sit up. The council has already called an emergency session, and you are the primary exhibit." The heavy iron doors at the end of the vault ground open, the sound of scraping stone vibrating through Seraphina’s teeth. Valerius entered, his black tuxedo jacket gone, the sleeves of his white shirt rolled up to his elbows to reveal intricate, glowing silver runes etched directly into the skin of his forearms. He looked exhausted, his aristocratic features hollowed out by the sudden drain on his reservoir, but his eyes were fixed on her with a fierce, possessive intensity that made her breath catch. "Leave us, Evander," Valerius commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that brooked no argument. Evander bowed slightly, his amber eyes lingering on Seraphina for a fraction of a second before he melted back into the corridor, the stone doors sealing shut behind him with an echoing thud. Left alone in the dim vault, Seraphina pushed herself up to the edge of the altar, the iron collar clinking against the stone. "You turned me into a monster," she said, her voice shaking with rage. "You had no right to force your blood into my system." "I kept you alive," Valerius shot back, crossing the space between them in a single, fluid stride. He caught her chin in his cold fingers, forcing her to look up into the dark depths of his eyes. "Cassandra intended to execute you on the red carpet to prove the Vance line was weak. If I had allowed you to die, the council would have seized the western sector before midnight. Your heart is beating because my blood allows it to beat. You will play your part until the final second of our agreement." "And what about Lysandra?" Seraphina demanded, leaning into his grip, her internal monologue screaming at her to strike him, to tear the corporate arrogance from his face. "Is she still rotting in your cells while you play politics with the council? You told me she was an asset. If your blood is inside me now, can I see her?" Valerius’s grip tightened slightly, his gaze dropping to the rapid pulse fluttering against her throat. The physical attraction between them had twisted into something dark and dangerous, a predatory pull amplified by the shared life force running through her veins. "Lysandra is secure. But you are in no position to bargain, Seraphina. Cassandra’s attack was a declaration of war. The council is currently voting on whether to nullify our marriage shield based on your medical fragility. If they discover my blood is the only thing keeping you upright, they will declare a vacancy and hunt you down for sport." "Let them try," she spat, her fingers tightening around the edge of the altar until her knuckles turned white. "I am already dying, Valerius. Eighty-eight days left, remember? A pack of ancient predators doesn't scare me more than the ticking clock in my own chest." Valerius stared at her, a sudden, unreadable emotion flickering across his pale face. For a moment, the cold billionaire facade cracked, revealing the raw, ancient king beneath the surface—a man carrying the weight of an empire on his shoulders, trapped by the same contracts he used to control her. He released her chin, stepping back into the shadows of the vault. "You have more spine than I gave you credit for," he murmured, his voice softening just enough to send a different kind of shiver down her spine. "But spine will not save you from Cassandra’s cross-examination. Put this on." He tossed a heavy, dark velvet cloak onto the altar. "The council chambers are through the lower eastern archway. They are waiting for proof that the Vance bride is intact. You will walk in there, you will stand at my side, and you will look the high priestess in the eye without blinking. If you show even a tremor of human weakness, they will tear the shield down." Seraphina wrapped the cloak around her bare shoulders, the fabric heavy and shielding. Her internal monologue settled into a cold, diamond-sharp focus. She was done being the victim in their shadow play. If she had to walk into a room full of monsters, she would do it as a queen, even if the crown was made of thorns and her heart belonged to the predator beside her. She slid off the altar, her boots hitting the stone floor with a solid, resonant thud. "Lead the way, husband," she said. They moved through the winding, subterranean corridors in a tense, rhythmic silence. The air grew progressively colder, thick with the scent of ancient dust and melting wax. As they approached the grand archway of the council chambers, the sound of low, rhythmic chanting began to vibrate through the walls. The elite of the supernatural underworld were gathered inside, a circle of silver-haired elders and dark-eyed lords who held the keys to the city’s hidden economy. At the center of the chamber stood Cassandra, her platinum hair gleaming under the light of three massive iron chandeliers. She held a curved silver dagger in her right hand, its blade dripping with a thick, luminescent fluid that smelled sharply of cinnamon and iron. "Ah, the resurrection," Cassandra mocked as Valerius and Seraphina entered the circle. The ambient chanting stopped instantly, every eye in the room fixing on the human girl who had survived the lethal pulse. "Valerius, you look positively drained. Tell the council, did you waste your sovereign reserves on a mortal vessel?" "My wife stands before you by her own strength, Cassandra," Valerius lied smoothly, his voice echoing with corporate authority through the stone hall. "The Vance shield remains unbroken." Cassandra smiled, a cruel, lethal expression that made the silver dagger catch the light. She stepped forward, the circle parting for her with instinctual deference. "Then let us test the validity of the bond according to the ancient statutes. A mortal shield must be pure. If her blood carries even a single drop of your sovereign lineage, the marriage is a fraud, and the sectors are forfeit." Before Valerius could step between them, Cassandra lunged forward with terrifying speed, the silver blade slicing a clean, deep line across Seraphina's exposed collarbone. The pain was instantaneous, but it wasn't human blood that welled up from the wound. A bright, luminescent silver fluid spilled over her skin, glowing with the unmistakable energy of the Vance sovereign line. The chamber erupted into a collective, predatory roar as the elders realized the truth. Cassandra laughed, raising her bloody hand to the council. "The shield is a lie! Arrest the human!"
