Chapter 2: The Scent of Intrusion

1520 Words
The headlights of the sleek black limousine hadn't even cut out before Lysandra slammed her hand against the dashboard. She didn't look at the driver, nor did she care that her sudden movement made the leather seats of Valerius’s pristine vehicle groan under the tension. Her gaze was glued entirely to the front porch of the gothic mansion, where the heavy oak double doors had just swallowed Seraphina whole. "She is walking directly into a trap," Lysandra muttered, her voice raw as her fingers curled into tight fists against her knees. Her internal monologue was a frantic, looping spiral of every dark rumor she had ever unearthed about the Vance family. Billionaires didn't just accept contract marriages from dying human girls out of the goodness of their hearts. Men like Valerius Vance didn't have hearts to begin with. They had ledger books, assets, and secrets that required heavy iron gates to keep hidden from the sun. "Mr. Vance is expecting her, ma'am," the driver said from the front seat, his voice entirely too level, entirely too flat. He didn't turn around. He just sat there like a statue carved from shadows, his hands resting precisely at ten and two on the steering wheel. "I don't give a damn who is expecting her," Lysandra snapped, her hand moving toward the door handle. "If she isn't out of that house in sixty minutes, I am tearing this place apart myself." Before her fingers could even latch onto the chrome release, a heavy, freezing weight settled over the entire vehicle. The air pressure dropped so instantly that the windows fogged with a layer of sudden frost. The engine didn't sputter; it simply died, the dashboard lights blinking out into pitch blackness. Lysandra froze, her breath hitching as a plume of white vapor escaped her lips. The hairs on the back of her neck stood straight up. Every instinct she possessed as a street-smart woman from the lower districts screamed at her to lock the door, but the lock mechanism clicked open on its own, a loud, metallic pop that echoed like a gunshot in the dead silence of the car. The rear door on her side didn't just open; it was ripped back with a violent, effortless jerk that tore the metal hinges clean through their housing. "You have a very loud mouth for a human, sweetheart," a rough, wild voice drawled from the darkness outside. Lysandra scrambled backward across the leather seat, her boots kicking uselessly against the center console as she tried to put distance between herself and the massive figure stepping into the frame of the ruined door. The amber light from the dashboard had died, but the moon cut through the heavy storm clouds just enough to illuminate him. He looked like Valerius, but fractured, stripped of the corporate polish and the expensive tailoring. His dark hair was soaked with rain, clinging to his forehead in wild strands, and his leather jacket smelled heavily of ozone, wet asphalt, and something ancient and metallic that made her stomach drop. "Who the hell are you?" Lysandra demanded, her voice shaking despite her desperate attempt to sound fierce. She reached into her jacket pocket, her fingers closing around the small silver pocket knife she always carried. It felt incredibly small, incredibly useless against the sheer presence of the man looming over the vehicle. "The name is Evander," he purred, leaning his broad shoulders into the interior of the car, completely ignoring the driver, who remained perfectly still, frozen in place like a puppet with its strings cut. Evander’s eyes weren't human. As he leaned closer, the ambient light caught the sudden, terrifying flash of vivid crimson in his pupils. "And you are trespassing on private property." *He’s one of them,* Lysandra’s mind screamed, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. The rumors weren't just exaggerations of eccentric wealth. The Vance family wasn't human. They were the things that ruled the dark, the predators her father had warned her about before he grew too tired to fight the world. *Seraphina is inside with a monster, and I’m trapped out here with another.* "Get away from me," she spat, lunging forward with the silver blade bared. She aimed straight for his throat, her movements driven by pure, unadulterated panic. Evander didn't flinch. He didn't even move his head. He simply raised two fingers, catching the silver blade right at the hilt before it could pierce his skin. The moment his fingers brushed the metal, a low hiss of burning flesh filled the air, the scent of scorched leather and iron rising between them. He winced slightly, his lips curling back to reveal sharp, prominent fangs, but his grip didn't loosen. With a casual twist of his wrist, he snapped the steel blade in half, letting the pieces clatter onto the floorboards. "Silver," Evander murmured, his voice dropping an octave, becoming a low, dangerous vibration that seemed to rattle her very teeth. "Cute. A bit old-fashioned, don't you think?" "Let me go," Lysandra gasped, her heart hammering so hard against her ribs she thought it would burst. He had her pinned by the wrist now, his grip like an iron shackle. His skin was unnaturally cold, a freezing baseline that seemed to siphon the warmth right out of her blood. "I haven't decided what to do with you yet," Evander said, his gaze sliding down to the heavy pulse jumping in her neck. His jaw tightened, a sudden, primal hunger fracturing his arrogant smirk. "Valerius bought himself a fragile little human bride to satisfy the board, but he didn't say anything about a matching set. You smell like rain and terror, Lysandra. It's incredibly distracting." "How do you know my name?" "I know everything that breathes within five miles of these gates," he whispered, pulling her forward until her face was mere inches from his. The proximity was overwhelming. He didn't smell like a corpse; he smelled like life pushed to a dangerous, predatory extreme. "Your friend signed her life away tonight. She belongs to my brother now. Which means you belong to the house. And since I run the house after dark, that makes you my responsibility." "I will never belong to you," Lysandra snarled, using her free hand to strike him across the face. The blow landed with a dull thud, doing absolutely nothing to move his head, but it made his red eyes flare with an intense, sudden heat. Evander chuckled, a low, dark sound that vibrated against her chest. "I love a fighter. The quiet ones break too easily." Before she could scream, he grabbed her by the waist and hauled her out of the limousine into the freezing downpour. Lysandra fought, twisting her body and kicking her boots against his shins, but he carried her as if she weighed nothing at all, his stride unbroken as he walked away from the car and toward the dark expanse of the woods flanking the mansion. The rain lashed against her face, blinding her, but she could feel the ground shifting beneath them, the manicured lawns giving way to rough earth and tangled roots. *I have to get back to Seraphina,* her internal thoughts franticly clawed at her sanity. *If I disappear into these woods, nobody is ever going to find me. Nobody even knows we came here.* Evander stopped in front of a heavy, iron-reinforced wooden door set directly into the stone foundation of the estate's western wing. It looked like an old root cellar, completely overgrown with dead ivy. He didn't use a key; he simply pressed his palm against the iron latch, and the heavy door groaned open, revealing a dark staircase descending straight into the earth. "Welcome to the lower levels, sweetheart," Evander whispered near her ear, his cold breath raising goosebumps along her skin. "The rules up there don't apply down here." Lysandra threw her weight backward, attempting to break his hold one last time as they stepped over the threshold. Her hand caught the stone doorframe, her fingernails scraping against the rough rock until they bled, leaving a smear of bright human blood against the ancient gray stone. Evander paused, his head snapping toward the scent, his nostrils flaring as his grip tightened to the point of pain. The heavy door slammed shut behind them with a definitive, echoing boom that severed the sound of the storm entirely. They were in total darkness now, the air thick with the scent of damp earth, old stone, and an underlying trace of iron. Lysandra stopped breathing, her body trembling violently against his chest as the silence stretched, heavy and suffocating. Then, a match flared in the dark. Evander held the tiny flame up to his face, his features illuminated by a demonic amber glow, his fangs fully extended as he looked down at her. But it wasn't just his face that changed; the walls around them weren't empty stone. Chains hung from the ceiling, and on the table in the center of the subterranean room sat a leather-bound logbook with her own father's name embossed on the cover.
