DOMINANT

Twelve year ago, one early dawn, Philip was trotting on the streets of Golden Creek. It was a usual routine he had developed. He jogged to free his mind and to keep himself fit. The vicinity of Golden Creek was humid from the coolness of the night. Most of the citizens were asleep and Philip continued his run increasing the speed at regular intervals. This was the exciting part of his day. As he increased the speed, the cool morning breeze whizzed in sporadic speed against his body. He loved it. Maggie was deep in bed at the moment, Philip had tried to coax her to join him, but she had refused many times saying that she had an early lecture the following day, so she needed the rest. The streets were empty, and Philip was the only one running. As he continued to run he noticed something strange. He felt a surge of energy just like electricity coursing down his veins and arteries as he run. And the more he increased the speed, the more he felt the energy and the faster he went. The circumstance was macabre, but Philip could not help it.  It was if he had been captured by the electricity flow through his blood thus making him go faster. He continued to increase in speed and increasing. Then he suddenly felt a high surge of electrical energy in his blood.   The energy was at its crescendo at the moment and within a twinkle, Philip still confused by what was happened, – he immediately disappeared, from the road and appeared in different vicinity called Coastal Ville. It took some time for Philip to realize he was jogging in different vicinity he was not familiar with. Philip looked on surprised by that had just happened to him. He could not just believe though it had happened. Perturbed, by had happened, he quietly found his way back home. When he got home he did not inform any one not even Maggie. Philip was of the view that, he had some eccentric magical powers which he was not sure of. The next day he tried to study his DNA and to his surprise that, there was nothing wrong with him. He then decided, he was never going to mention that incident to anyone ever again, hoping that, what happened will never happen to him again.   Currently, Philip was asleep with her wife after some minutes he jerked up frightened from a dream he had just had. The dream was enigmatically about his the same incident twelve years ago - jogging on the road and he accidently teleporting - disappearing. The thing he was trying to avoid had replayed in his dream. Philip sat in his bed reticent. He turned to his wife who was as usual deep in sleep. Philip was tensed by the dream he had just woken up to, he remembered many years ago, what had happened. The dream he had just had was the same incident that had actually happened to him twelve years ago. What is the meaning of this? Philip thought. Philip thought everything was alright, but with the dream he had just had, he believed, there was something wrong. He then decided to find out what had really happened to him, twelve years go. But in all of this, he did not see it prudent to inform his wife or his children. With that resolution, Philip curled himself back to bed, in anticipation for another brighter day.     -------     Fourteen days had passed, since the incident that happened at the super market. And the whole citizens of Golden Creek were sad for the boys that had been hurt. Many blamed Abena and her siblings for what they had done while others also blamed the two g**g boys for inciting the conflict in the first place. At the moment, it was all mayhem and chaos at the Golden Creek hospital. Bad news had just been aired. The younger of the g**g boys who attacked Abena and Yaw was okay with his hand injury banded. But that was not all, the elder one who had his heart hit by the photons from the eyes of Yaw needed to be operated on. The energy that struck his heart had caused a little heart distortion. Philip and Maggie had been briefed by the doctor about the situation. As, Philip and Maggie sat and talked about the fate of the young man’s life, mayhem was taking place outside the hospital.   The g**g boys—The Pirates about sixteen in all had all converged at the hospital, in their red and black attires and bandanas fasten on their heads, bellowing and shouting derogatory and infuriating songs. They were in to see their brothers. But as the security had been given strict orders not to allow any of them in, they just stuck outside shouting and singing songs that said that they were not going to stop until they had seen their brothers. The leader of the g**g was a nineteen-year old muscular guy known  called Kwei Madon. He was the fiercest and valiant among them all and he was believed to be a Senior High School graduate. He beckoned the rest of the boys to be quiet. The boys became quiet with that. Kwei then moved to the security and tried to bargain the terms of their entry. The security man was strict and was not ready to listen to anything Kwei had in mind. Kwei was getting livid. But he did well to calm down. Kwei was still doing his best, but it seemed he was not getting an upper hand.   Then like no one was expecting, the younger g**g member who had been well treated, just walked outside, and all the g**g boys roared for seeing one of their brothers back. The security quickly opened the door and the guy who was called Edem Dotse walked to his brothers. They all hugged him. The Pirates were fully happy to see him okay. It was left with one of their brothers. Quickly they all pulled Edem aside and tried to get the real details of what really happened. As usual Edem narrated the story saying, Abena and Yaw were to blame. Kwei looked on more furious and beamed with amplified hate.   “So how is Eddy? We heard he is very hurt?” Kwei inquired from Edem. Edem made a remorseful face for what he was about to say.   “Eddie is hurt. Very bad. The boy hit him plus some magic power from in eyes.”   “So, is he okay?” Kwei inquired. “He for do operation, but we now know say he go die or not. Boys we for pray and show that family something. I see the man and in wife. They enter the doctor’s office.”   “You see them!” One of the boys exclaimed. “I see them, the dey the office right now” Edem emphasized. The boys then started chanting and bellowing like they had won a world cup.   “Cool down boys, cool down boys. Good, Edem, this is our chance. We have the show the man and the woman that, we are the Pirates of Golden Creek. Boys are we ready…” Kwesi gave the green light. The boys all roared. That was what they had been waiting for all this while.   “When they came out, then we quickly attack?” Kwei commanded.   “Good Plan!” The boys responded in unison. Edem nodded to the plan as he now felt a little satiation for what the family had done to them.      -------   Philip and Maggie had finished discussing the fate of young Eddy Vorsah, the g**g boy who needed a cesarean section in the heart. The prospect was that; he could survive only if they transferred him to a better hospital. But the doctor had assured the Quansah’s that he was going to do his best. Philip and Maggie stood to their feet so did the doctor.   “So, I will advise you inform the Chief of Police of the decision you have decided to take.” The doctor said.   “Sure, we will.” Philip responded. “And what about the boy’s mother. I heard he has a mother. Her only parent?” Maggie inquired.   “Oh yes, she came around three days ago, and may come around, tomorrow I will explain everything to her.” The doctor said. The wailings and the tantrums of the g**g were still audible from the office of the doctor.   “These boys, will they ever leave us?” Philip inquired. “I believe by this time they are all scattered at the main entrance.”   “Yes, that is true. They will not allow you two to go peacefully. Trust me.” The doctor said.   “So, what do we do doctor?” Maggie inquired a little tensed. The doctor paced his head up and got an idea.   “Follow me.” The doctor said and moved away with the Quansah’s. Surprisingly, the hospital had an old south gate that had become defunct. That was where the polytank was placed. The doctor dexterously led Philip and Maggie’s through the small exit and they quickly entered their vehicle at the car park without the knowledge of the g**g boys who were still waiting for them to show up. But the truth of the matter was that, they never showed up after two hours of waiting. Kwei was now ever furious, and he quickly dispatched the g**g having told them of their next plan.     -------   It was past afternoon, getting to twilight, some few minutes exceeding the closing time of Abena and her siblings. Abena and her siblings were now in the 4x4 Red Volvo coming home. As strange as it may sound, it was not Kobe that was driving them.  It was not the black Opel Camry. Koby Offei was not the one who had gone to pick them up this time. Koby was on an errand. The time was 4:30 PM. Philip was the one behind the car driving. Maggie sat at the right front seat in her own thoughts. Abena, Yaw and Kwesi sat at the back, exhausted from the daily activities at school. After Philip and Maggie had secretly left the hospital undetected, all that they feared was that, the g**g will invade the school and attack their children. So, in desperation, Maggie had gone to the school to see the welfare of the children and also to wait for Philip who had decided to go to the police station to inform the Chief of police of all that had ensued at the hospital. After Maggie waited for some time, it was time for closing and Philip had arrived the same time the kids had closed.   The kids were happy to see both parents around as they jumped into Philips 4x4 red Volvo and straight away they moved to the University campus. At the University were Philip and Maggie worked, Philip made some calls to ensure that Koby drove the Black Opel Camry as a decoy to lure the g**g away from their original route they normally took. And after Abena, Yaw and Kwesi waiting in the office of Philip for two hours, Maggie came into to say that it was time now go home. The children were excited though they did not have a clue of the real reason they had not gone home directly from their school. Now in the vehicle they had just passed the supermarket were the first incident took place and they had to drive along for some time on a second-class road, before they finally got to their tarred road that lead straight to their house. Abena, Yaw and Kwesi were all tired but were not asleep yet. Maggie jerked a little from her initial position and turned to her children,   “Everything alright back there?” Maggie inquired with her head turned. No response came. Maggie turned to look at Philip. Philip also looked at her back, they both said nothing.   “Mom…” Yaw retorted, “Why did we take so long to go home?” Maggie smiled not certain how to answer his sons’ question. “Is it because of the street boys? The boy I hurt. Is he alright?” Yaw inquired again in a sober tone. Maggie turned to look at Philip again. This time Philip nodded his head saying, you can tell him if you want to.   “Yes honey.” Maggie replied with her head turned. “We saw him at the hospital today, he did recovery. The doctors know it was not your fault and that it was an accident.”   “It was not an accident Mom. Those guys attacked us, and Yaw saved me with what came from his eyes. The blue light. Yaw is not to blame at all.” Abena added valiantly.   “The blue light that came out of Yaw’s eyes, is Yaw’s powers. Yaw do you have powers?”  Young Kwesi asked. Philip thought it was time to jump in.   “Okay, Kay so we do not know what that is yet. But as it stands Yaw do not have powers neither does Abena. Everything thing that happened at the supermarket was an accident. Okay?” Philip said commandingly.   “Yes Dad.” Kwesi said. “And what about the other guy who had his arm broken?” Abena inquired. Maggie turned and replied again, “Oh he is doing just fine. He has been even released.” Maggie then made a joke and the family was back in again all of them smiling at what Maggie had said. The talked on, and Philip drove on. There were just on the tip of the second-class road about to take the final path that lead to their house when Abena bellowed from what she had seen in front of them,   “Mom…Look at the road.” Abena said pointing with her hand. On the road was a large table that and been turn on the side stretching its horizontal leg. On the table were about six block of cement concrete that had been erected to form a formidable blockade for any vehicle to pass. Philip looked on surprised. There was no one on the road, but Philip could not pass on the road since all the space had been occupied by the blockade.   “What is happening?” Philip said and brought the vehicle to a halt. “Everyone should stay calm I will get to the bottom of this.” Philip got out of the vehicle and moved to the see the blockade. As he stood scrutinizing the length of the blockade that is when he saw the g**g boys divided into two all coming from the opposite sides. Philip then understood it. The blockade was just a set up. This time he did not feel like going back to his vehicle to drive away. He wanted to face them squarely. Kwei Madon came in briskly and stood facing Philip.   “Can you please give us the chance to pass? After we are gone, I am sure you can go back to where ever you are doing with the concretes.” Philip said. Kwesi look on feeling offended by that. Kwei moved forward towards Philip with his other g**g members just behind him.   “You do not get it, do you? I heard you are a University lecturer. So, you are intelligent. Your son hurt one of our brothers, and he is now fighting for his life in the hospital. Per the canons of our g**g, your son has to pay for what he did.” Kwei said.   “Okay, I do not know about your g**g or your canons. But what I do know is that, it was an accident. Your boys attacked my children.” Philip retorted.   “An accident my foot. Did see what happened?” Kwei asked. “My children told me the whole truth. And I believe what they told me.”   “What if all what they told you was a lie?” Kwei snapped.   “No my children can never lie. They are good kids.” Philip retorted. Kwei looked on disgusted by that statement.   “And we are the bad ones right?” Kwei nodded his head. Philip did not respond to that. “I do not care about that, your son hurt one of our brothers and he has to pay for his crime.”   “I thought that was the job of the police – enforcing the law.” Philip replied. “I do not trust the police and to add, your daughter also hurt on of our guys. But she is lucky he is okay. But your son has to pay for his deeds”   “My son will do no such thing. And I will give you the final warning. All of you.” Philip said pointing to all the g**g members now drawing closer. “Stay away from my family. I will not repeat that ever again.”   Kwei laughed. “And what if we do not do that. What will you do?”   “I will let the police handle this. And I guess you do not want that. The police will not talk to you politely like I have done.” Philip said. Kwei and the rest of the members laughed to that, like they knew something Philip had no idea about. With that, some of the g**g members whistled and a third faction came from behind the vehicle of Philip. They rushed to the car eager to open it.   “Mom…they are coming here.” Abena said. Maggie quickly locked the car internally. “All of you be calm and do not look at them.” Maggie said as the car was fully locked now.    “Get the boy, and if they refuse beat them all.” Kwei bellowed and took a minute bottle from his back pocket. The bottle contained a green solution. He quickly uncorked the solution and drunk it instantly. Immediately his checks bulged out, and then returned to normal. Kwei looked up to the skies and fastened his hand in a blow fashion. The green liquid was seen to be coursing through his vein and Kwei was a different person now. He quickly moved towards Philip who looked a little terrified and clutched his neck. Kwei’s hand was now at the neck of Philip and Kwei had lifted him up. Kwei was now filled with enormous strength. Maggie was watching from the car. She could not believe Philip was levitating in the air struggling to breathe. And the possibility of him dying made her scream.   “You will give us your son, or you die,” Kwei threatened Philip. Kwei’s hand was now strangling Philip’s neck. Philip suffocated with his eyes bulging out. The scene was macabre. Maggie could not sit and watch any longer.   “All of you stay in the car. I will be back.” Maggie said and quickly unlocked the car got out and locked it again. She bolted to her husband and hurled him down. Maggie and Philip were now on the floor, balancing over each other. Kwei on seeing that quickly sprung furiously onto Philip unleashing blows in rapid succession on him. Philip looked on helpless as Maggie tried to make Kwei stop. All these while, the other g**g members still struggled to open the car, whilst Abena and sibling sat quietly watching their parents in agony.   “Mom and Dad are getting hurt. We have to do something.” Abena lamented. “Mom said we should not do anything thing.” Yaw replied in haste.   “Well, mom is not here.” Abena said and quickly unlocked the car and locked it again. Abena moved to a vantage spot and with anger brewing in her blood. She opened her mouth again producing the acoustics sonic waves that hit Kwei to the ground. Abena then turned to the other g**g members and shot then with another sonic wave from her mouth. Abena quickly moved to join her mom and helped his father to his knees. After Philip and Maggie were on their feet, Abena turned to the g**g members and with a furious tone bellowed,   “All of you never mess with my Dad and Mom ever again. I have anger, craziness and powers in my DNA. And the next time you will all see the worse part of me.”   Kwei looked on still not impressed. Then from nowhere one of the g**g boys, produced a g*n from the back of his pocket and pointed it to Abena. Maggie was the one who saw it first and as the boy was about to pull the trigger, Maggie shouted, “Abena no…” and hurled her hands towards Abena.   The sound of the g*n ricocheted. And all of the g**g members turned to their heads to the direction of the g*n. And surprisingly, Abena was stunned, thinking she had been shot. But the truth of the matter was that, the bullet from the g*n was levitating in the air. Something was happening. The bullet from the g*n was levitating in the air indeed. What was happening? Everyone thought. This was a mystery to everyone. Everyone watched on astonished. And the rational question everyone would ask was that, how is it possible that the bullet is levitating in the air? But that was not mystery at all. Maggie was to blame. The hands of Maggie had generated an electro-kinetic field that was holding the bullet in air.   Maggie had bio-telekinetic abilities. She could control and manipulate solid matter. Maggie looked stunned by what she had been able to do. She was the most surprised person at the moment. She then let her hands come down and the bullet fell flat to the ground. All the members of the g**g were stunned, including Philip, and Abena. With the atmosphere already tensed, Yaw and Kwesi quickly, moved out of the car to take a look at what had happened. Kwei on seeing what Maggie had done quickly bellowed to the rest of his brothers that they all disappear.   Minutes later, all the g**g boys were gone, only the Quansah family was left. Still reeling from the mysterious incident Abena, moved to her mom and gave her a big hug, almost screaming in her arms. Yaw and Kwesi also moved to hug their Dad. Abena retreated hoping her mom would be elated by her deed. But Maggie was still lost. She was not sure about what she had just done. She was distraught.   “What did I just do?” Maggie muttered to Philip. Philip who was stunned, could not give her a fixed response.   “Mom, you just saved my life. That is what you just did.” Abena intoned with so much confidence.
