Jethro sat in the waiting room of the offices of William Vickers, trying not to fidget. Yesterday’s visit with Stella had been uncomfortable but today was going to be a lot worse. After this meeting he had to visit Conguise. He wanted to ask the secretary how soon Vickers could see him, but he’d already asked twice, and the answer had been the same.
Mr. Vickers is very busy. He’ll see you as soon as he can.
The lawyer may be busy, but he wasn’t that busy. This was a punishment. He’d come to the office to schedule an appointment, but the secretary had said that Vickers had instructed her to have him wait. At first, he’d been pleasantly surprised that Vickers had said anything about him to anyone. He shouldn’t have been. He’d been waiting for over two hours.
