Liara
I sipped the hot coffee, it burns my throat, giving the feel of being alive. I grab the file from the drawer going through it, my secretary as being the one sorting out every document since the incident. I began signing those that needed my attention, and marking those that needed proper evaluation. The office buzzed with its usual rhythm.
A sharp knock interrupted her, Jamie, her secretary.
“Ma’am……. there is something……the new”
“what do you mean?” I said frowning at her.
She hesitated. “You should see for yourself”. Passing her phone to me. I took it and saw the headlines. LUCIEN DENMARK is back and walking. With a picture of his full posture.
My heart stops. For a moment, I couldn’t move. He is back
Without thinking, I grabbed my car keys and rushed out from the office. My heartbeat pounding loudly in my ears I sped through the city, breaking traffic laws.
Lucien was home.
My husband.
Tears burned my eyes as I imagined the moment I saw him. He would be confused, maybe annoyed, but I would explain and he is going to forgive me and hold me in the hands.
I reached the DENMARK estate, my car screeched to a stop.
Chaos.
Dozens of reporters swarmed outside the towering gate, camera flashing, people shouting, microphones shoving forward as reporters called out questions.
I showed the door open and ran out, pushing past the crowd.
“I need to see Lucien!” I called out, the reporters swarming me, security guards were able to recognize me as they paved the way from me, but before I could enter, a familiar voice cut through the noises.
“Well well. Look who decided to show up “
I turned.
Elvery Denmark.
Elvery stood at the entrance, dressed in an elegant white gown, her face masked with disgust.
My chest tightened as I stepped forward, refusing to allow her mean face to ruin my spirit. “I don’t have time for this. I need to see my husband”
Elvery let out a wicked laugh. “your what “
“my husband” my brow furrowed.
“you, poor, delusional girl” Elvery took a slow poised step forward, her lip curled in a grin.
I clenched my fist. “stop trying to cause trouble, I know you hate me. I don’t have time for it. I have every right to see my Lucien”
Elvery tilted her head, eyes gleaming with delight. “and what right is that exactly?”
My heart pounded. Something was wrong.
Elvery lifted her manicured hand and waved toward the house where Lucien was standing
“Lucien darling, she called out sweetly, “do you recognize this woman?”
I held a sharp breath, my throat tiered as I watched him
Lucien stood at the pave way, tall, strong, no wheelchair. His piercing green eyes watched me, cold and unreadable.
My lips parted. “Lucien”
My feet moved before I could think, I ran toward him. “Lucien, it’s me”
Before I could reach him, he took a step backward.
I froze. My eyes gazing at him.
“Lucien?” I whispered.
He just stared at me without expression.
“I don’t know you” he spoke coldly, his green eyes dimmed.
My world shattered.
His words made me stumble back.
“W-what”
Elvery laughed behind me, stepping forward, standing beside Lucien. “you heard him”.
“No’, I whispered, shaking my head.
“No, that’s not possible. Lucien, please, is me liara”
Lucien’s expression is still cold. “I’ve never seen you in my life he said indifferently.
I felt air knocked out from my lungs, tears threatening to fall.
I turned desperately to Elvery. “Youuu—you did something to him!”
Elvery mouth twitched. “oh, darling. You still don’t get it, do you?”
She leaned in, her voice wicked. “no one even knows you are his wife.”
My breath hitched.
She stood a step back, her lip smiling, lifting her chin. “the world doesn’t know about your marriage. There was no record, no proof, no evidence written that said you were married ´
My vision blurred. “that’s not true
I turned back at Lucien, grabbing his hands. “Lucien, think! I was there! I was by your side every night. I love you! You loved me!”
Lucien frowned and turned to his mother. “did I get married
Elvery sighed, her face tired. “No darling, she is lying, she’s just some desperate woman who wants to steal your power. Our rivalry in business”
I let out a sharp gasp from my mouth. “No! that’s a lie!”
The murmurs around them grew louder. Reporters leaned forward, catching every word, her camera clacking.
Percy steeped out from the crowd, her heels clicking against the pavement as she walked towards us. Seeing me, she smirked.
My stomach twisted in dread.
“oh, sweet liara, still playing dumb” she cooed
With a dramatic flick, she tossed a thick envelope at my feet.
I swallowed hard, and knelt down, my finger trembling as I picked it up.
My eyes widened.
LIARA HARRIS; A FAKE DECOY TO STEAL LUCIEN DENMARK’S POWER.
My vision blacked out, I staggered backward, almost falling. Twisted lies, fabricated screenshots, fake receipts and pictures, painting me as a con who had paved a way to scam the Denmark fortune.
My hands shook violently.
“no- no”
My lips parted as I turned to Lucien.
“you know me”
But Lucien's gaze was distant. Cold
“a fraud”
The word sent dagger to my already fragile heart.
I fell to the ground. “Lucien please, you love me. You know I can never betray you”
Whisper surrounded her.
“I knew she was too good to be true”
“always going to the hospital to show she is caring”
“God, how embarrassing, I could die if I was her"
“eww, the police should arrest her”
Tears burned my eyes as I scanned the crowd. The medias. The police. The very ones who put out stories that she is good and caring toward her husband where his families couldn’t”
“Miss liara, you are under arrest for fraud, embezzlement, and corporate theft”
Gasps filled the air. Cameras clicking, reporters moving forward.
The world stopped for a split second. My ear is ringing as the words sang in.
Before I could process, a cold metal clicked around my wrists.
Handcuff.
A sharp pain spread, as my arms were pulled behind my back. The humiliation burned through me.
“No—wait, this is a setup, they did something to my Lucien” my voice cracked.
The media swarmed like vultures, as reporters shoved themselves toward me.
“Ms. Harris, what do you have to say about the allegations?”
“how do you respond to the leaked documents?”
Their mic shoving my face hard, the police doing nothing about it. Tears coming out from my eyes.
Percy stepped forward, her expression of feigned concern.
“I’m sorry liara, but the truth always comes out eventually” she signed dramatically.
Before I could respond to her, the policemen pushed me forward, my last gaze on Lucien.
