On accepting his advances, Percy had graciously overlooked his comparative lack of funds when he selected him from an enviably wide circle of admirers. At the time, Jo’s adoration and enthusiasm made up for the lack of extravagant gifts, as well as his being young, muscular, and not ill-looking.
But now, Percy was feeling slightly aggrieved by this indulgence. After that shameful episode yesterday, when he had received a billet-doux on the merits of buttons, Percy had been forgiving enough to permit Jolyon an opportunity to be suitably contrite.
