Chapter Three: Echoes in the Dark The elevator lurches upward, and I press myself against the cold steel wall, my wrist throbbing where the rune-like mark glows under my sleeve. My breath comes in short, jagged gasps, the shadow figure’s icy eyes burned into my mind. Who—or what—was that? And why did touching the Synapse prototype fling me into that starry void, Elias’s voice ringing in my ears like a siren call? I squeeze my eyes shut, trying to ground myself, but the hum of the elevator feels like the pulse of the mark on my skin, alive and insistent. The doors ding open on the twentieth floor, and I stumble into the bustling office of Vantage Enterprises. It’s late afternoon, the July sun slanting through the glass walls, casting long shadows that make me jump. The office is a hive of activity—designers sketching, coders muttering at screens—but it feels like I’m moving through a dream, every face a potential threat. I need answers, but I don’t know who to trust. Not Mia, with her cryptic warnings. Not Julian, with his too-easy charm. And definitely not Elias, whose silver eyes and knowing smile are tearing my reality apart. “Lila!” Mia’s voice cuts through the haze. She’s at her desk, her blue-streaked hair glowing under the fluorescents. She waves me over, her expression a mix of concern and curiosity. “You look like you just ran from a serial killer. What happened in the lab?” I drop into the chair beside her, my hands shaking as I clutch my portfolio bag. “It’s… a lot,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper. I want to tell her about the mark, the void, the shadow figure, but the words stick in my throat. What if she thinks I’m crazy? Or worse, what if she’s part of whatever’s happening? Mia leans closer, her dark eyes searching mine. “Spill it, girl. You’re freaking me out.” I glance around, making sure no one’s listening. The office hums, but Julian’s nowhere in sight, and Elias’s glass office is empty. “Okay,” I say, lowering my voice. “Something weird happened down there. I touched the Synapse prototype, and… I saw things. Like, a vision. Stars. Elias’s voice. And then there was this… shadow person watching me.” Mia’s eyebrows shoot up, but she doesn’t laugh or roll her eyes. Instead, she leans back, her fingers drumming on her energy drink can. “A shadow person? Like, a hallucination?” “I don’t know,” I admit, my stomach twisting. “It felt real. Too real. And then there’s this.” I hesitate, then pull back my sleeve, showing her the glowing mark. It’s fainter now, but the rune-like lines are unmistakable, swirling like a living tattoo. Mia’s eyes widen, and she grabs my wrist, turning it under the light. “Holy s**t, Lila. Where did this come from?” “I don’t know!” My voice cracks, and I yank my sleeve down, suddenly aware of the curious glances from nearby desks. “It just… appeared. After Elias touched me.” Mia’s jaw tightens, and she lowers her voice to a hiss. “Elias touched you? What the hell’s going on, Lila? Did he do something to you in that lab?” “No, it wasn’t like that,” I say quickly, my cheeks burning. “He just… steadied me when I tripped. But then the mark showed up, and I saw that void, and now I’m freaking out because it’s the same mark he has on his wrist.” Mia’s face goes pale, and for a second, I think she’s going to bolt. Instead, she grabs her laptop and starts typing furiously, her fingers flying over the keys. “Okay, this is next-level weird. I’ve heard rumors about Elias and some shady tech from way back, but this? This is something else.” “What kind of rumors?” I ask, leaning closer, my heart pounding. She glances around, then whispers, “Stuff about a project called Dreamscape. It was before my time, but my mom worked on it. Some kind of neural tech that went south. People got hurt. She never talked about it, but I found files once. Weird stuff about dreams and mind control.” My blood runs cold. Dreams. Mind control. The pieces are starting to fit, and I don’t like the picture they’re forming. “Mia, do you think Synapse is connected to Dreamscape?” She doesn’t answer right away, her eyes glued to her screen. Then she curses under her breath. “s**t. Someone’s trying to lock me out of the server. Hang on.” Her fingers move faster, and I catch a glimpse of encrypted files flashing across her screen, labeled with words like “neural sync” and “subject zero.” “Subject zero?” I say, my voice barely a whisper. “What’s that?” Mia freezes, her eyes darting to mine. “I… don’t know. But it’s buried deep in Vantage’s archives. I need time to crack it.” She slams her laptop shut, her expression grim. “Lila, you need to stay away from Elias. Whatever’s going on, he’s at the center of it.” I nod, but my mind’s racing. Stay away from Elias? Every fiber of my being is screaming to confront him, to demand answers about the mark, the void, the shadow figure. But Mia’s right—something’s off, and I’m not sure I’m ready to face it. “Hey, ladies!” Julian’s voice makes me jump. He’s strolling toward us, his blazer slung over one shoulder, that charming smile firmly in place. “Plotting world domination without me?” Mia rolls her eyes, but I notice her shoulders tense. “Just showing Lila the ropes, Carver. What do you want?” “Easy, tiger,” he says, raising his hands. “Just checking on our new star. Elias didn’t scare you off, did he, Lila?” I force a laugh, my wrist tingling under my sleeve. “Not yet. But it’s only day one.” He chuckles, but his eyes linger on me a second too long, like he’s searching for something. “You’ll do great. Just don’t let the lab spook you. That place gives everyone the creeps.” My stomach lurches. Does he know about the shadow figure? Or is he just fishing? “Yeah, it’s… intense,” I say, keeping my tone light. “What’s with all the secrecy down there?” Julian shrugs, but there’s a flicker of something in his eyes—caution, maybe, or guilt. “Elias likes his toys locked up tight. Synapse is his baby. You’ll get used to it.” Mia snorts, muttering something under her breath, and I catch the word “liar.” Julian doesn’t react, but the air between them crackles with tension. I’m about to change the subject when my phone buzzes. Another email from Elias. Lila, I need you back in the lab. Now. We have a breakthrough. – Elias My heart skips, and I shove my phone in my pocket before Mia or Julian can see. “I, uh, need to run to the bathroom,” I lie, standing so fast I nearly knock over my chair. Mia grabs my arm, her grip tight. “Lila, don’t go back down there. Not alone.” “I’ll be fine,” I say, pulling free. Her concern is touching, but the mark on my wrist is pulsing again, urging me toward answers. Toward Elias. --- The elevator ride to B3 feels like descending into a nightmare. The hum of the Synapse prototype greets me as the doors open, louder now, almost alive. Elias is at the console, his black shirt rolled up to his elbows, revealing the glowing tattoo on his wrist. He looks up, and his silver eyes pin me in place, a mix of relief and something darker flashing across his face. “You came,” he says, his voice low and urgent. “Good. We don’t have much time.” “Time for what?” I ask, my voice sharper than I intend. I stay near the elevator, my hand hovering over the call button. “Elias, what’s going on? What’s this mark on my wrist? And don’t lie to me.” He steps closer, and I flinch, but he stops, raising his hands like he’s calming a wild animal. “I’m not going to hurt you, Lila. But you’re right—there are things you need to know. The mark… it’s a connection. To Synapse. To me.” My breath catches, and I pull back my sleeve, the rune glowing brighter now, mirroring his. “A connection? What does that mean? Why do I have this?” He hesitates, his jaw tightening. “It’s complicated. Synapse isn’t just a device. It’s… a bridge. Between minds. Between realities. And you, Lila, you’re special. Your mind is… unique.” “Stop with the vague bullshit!” I snap, my fear boiling into anger. “You’re in my dreams, Elias. Every night, for years. And now you’re here, and I’ve got this mark, and I saw something down here—a shadow figure, watching me. Tell me what’s happening, or I’m out.” His eyes darken, and for a moment, I think he’s going to shut me out. But then he steps closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. “The shadow figure… you saw it?” I nod, my throat tight. “It was real. I know it was.” He curses under his breath, running a hand through his hair. “That’s not possible. Not yet.” He grabs my wrist, his touch sending a jolt through me, and the mark flares, bright enough to light the room. “Lila, listen to me. You’re in danger. Not from me, but from… something else. Something tied to Synapse.” “What?” I yank my hand free, my heart racing. “What’s tied to Synapse? Who was that figure?” Before he can answer, the lights flicker, and the hum of the prototype spikes, a high-pitched whine that makes my teeth ache. Elias spins toward the console, his fingers flying over the controls. “No, no, no,” he mutters, his calm facade gone. “It’s activating.” “What’s activating?” I demand, backing toward the elevator. He doesn’t answer, his focus on the screens, where data streams are going haywire. The pod in the center of the lab glows, its wires pulsing like veins, and I feel it—a tug in my chest, like something’s pulling me toward it. My wrist burns, and the mark is blinding now, its light casting eerie shadows on the walls. “Lila, get out!” Elias shouts, but it’s too late. The pod’s glow intensifies, and the air crackles, the world tilting around me. I’m falling, not physically but mentally, into that starry void again. Elias’s voice echoes, desperate. “Lila, fight it! Don’t let it take you!” But it’s not just his voice. There’s another, colder, sharper, like ice in my veins. “You’re mine, Subject Zero,” it hisses, and I see it—the shadow figure, standing in the void, its hooded form towering over me, its eyes glinting with malice. It reaches for me, and I scream, my voice swallowed by the darkness. The lab snaps back, and I’m on the floor, gasping, Elias kneeling beside me, his hands on my shoulders. “Lila, stay with me,” he says, his voice raw with panic. “You’re okay. You’re here.”
