Chapter two

We have a connection that I can sense, and I now realize that you are my true love. You've been that way forever. "But I already love someone else - Mavis, her and I... we vowed we'd stay together," he hesitated, cringing as if the words were painful to utter. I could feel as though a carpet had been torn out from under my feet, yet all that was left was empty space. Even though it hurt to remove my hand from Rehor, I did it. "What are you saying?" My eyes pinched with tears again, and my voice cracked slightly. Rehor struggled to maintain his composure while his face twisted. "Susan." I leaned away from him, hiding my face with my hands and shaking my head. I preferred not to hear it. I was unable to. Rehor held my face in his hands and wiped a tear that was running down my cheek with his thumb. "I'm not able to accept you as my mate, Susan. I apologize. I apologize so much." I sobbed, buried my face in Rehor's chest and absorbing up his aroma while I could. Rehor held onto me while this whole process. It took a while for my cries to fade into silent sobs. I leaned against Rehor, who was encircling me with his arms, caressing my hair and supporting my trembling body. I breathed in against his neck and clenched my hands on the material of his shirt. "Please don't turn me down just yet. Not right now." I clutched to him, my voice scratchy, just a whisper, saying, "Let me at least have today, even if it's fake." I had never experienced a rejection this significant. Not here, by myself, on this campus, where all eyes could see the damage. And not today—it was just too much. Rehor rocked me gently while I was silent for a while to consider it. "All right. Not right now." He gave me a firm push on my shoulders, released me, and said, "I should go. I apologize once more." He extended his hand as though to touch my hair, but then quickly withdrew it and shoved it into his pocket. Without more word, Rehor turned and walked out of the garden, his motions jerky. He vanished into the busy corridor. I just stood there, empty-eyed, staring after him. My inner wolf howled in agony from deep within my chest. My tears dried up, I felt numb, and any remaining hope was completely dashed. I wanted Rehor to come back with all of my heart. To plead with him to stay. However, I was worn out, and there was a tiny voice in the back of my head telling me that I shouldn't have expected more. that no one would ever want me. that I would never fit in. I got up from the bench and walked out of the garden with legs that felt like lead. After what had transpired, the idea of taking additional classes was intolerable. Instead, I sneaked out of the college and made my way to the woods that border the school. It was also not an option to go home. Anita would understand, of course, but her pitying grin would only make me feel worse. I just wanted to be by myself at that moment. I smelled the clean scent of the woods in front of me as I scraped my sneaker across the tarmac. Like him, Pine and Engelwood. I ignored the idea for a moment. But before I could reach the woods, I heard several pairs of footsteps following me, and when I turned around, I saw that five members of Mavis's group were moving in my direction. Why this time? I thought of running, but I saw Lana among the throng, and she always managed to run me down with her long, slender limbs and athletic ability. I saw no difference in the way things went this time. Rather, I decelerated and allowed them to overtake me, creating a semicircle that separated their target from the woodland. I crossed my arms and was ready to protect myself. "Gingersnaps, hello! What's the deal with you running around here with your tail between your legs?" The speaker in question, Claudia, blinked at me and put on a menacing phony smile. "Hello Claudia, For once, why don't you mind your own business?" "Doesn't Mavis need her guard dogs today?" I snarled back. I hoped my voice was not audible to them. I hoped they wouldn't see the tears streaming down my face or my swollen eyes. Claudia's eyes lit up with hatred as she jabbed my chest with a neatly manicured nail. "I heard somebody found her partner today," she murmured in a sing-song manner, and then she prodded me once more, a little more forcefully. I gave her hand a smackdown. "That has no bearing on any of you." Cladia pulled back her hand full of claws and tilted her head to the side. Yes, but it does. I had heard earlier that you and Rehor were getting rather close over in the gardens. Also, Alissa claimed to have witnessed the two of you exiting the restroom together. Did you not, Alissa?" She turned to face the bottle blonde on her left, who gave her a blank nod and a shrug as though the entire exchange had bored her. "It's not what you believe; he has no desire at all." My speech was disjointed, and I interrupted myself before I could express the unpleasant reality. Claudia did not try to hide how much this torture pleased her. A chilly smile appeared on her countenance. "You're not wanted by him." That's when I decided enough was enough. I moved past the towering female and headed toward the forest's canopy. But Claudia was obviously not going to let me go that simply. Before I could even gather my strength, she grabbed my shirt by the shoulder, pulled me back, and sent me to the ground. Claudia possessed strength. superhuman strength. She was even more dangerous since she was channeling her inner wolf's might. I landed on my back and tried to get back up right away, but Claudia kicked me in the stomach with her pointed boot. I gave way, lost my breath, and fell to my knees. Before I could even catch my breath, Lana kicked me again, sending me tumbling across the asphalt. Claudia grabbed my hair and pulled my head up to confront the girls. "You and the person you choose to lust for are completely irrelevant to us. However, we can't let you get any closer to Mavis's man than that." She then slammed my head on the floor, causing blood to flow from a fresh cut in my brow and stars to burst across my vision. The girls went on their attack, teasing and laughing as I rolled onto my side to try to shield myself. Every kick or jab that struck its target made me cry out, and I was unable to think clearly. They appeared to be trying to kill. They had tormented me repeatedly, but this time they weren't holding back. After what seemed like an endless attack, out of the mist came the sound of a fresh voice. "What in the world is happening here?" A voice so low, so menacing. A voice as cold as stone.
