No Escape Inside the Claim
The air inside the command hall felt heavier than before.
Not because of the maps.
Not because of the war markings spreading across the table.
But because of what had just been confirmed.
Ronan was coming.
And this time, he wasn’t coming alone.
My fingers were still pressed against the intercepted message when I felt it again.
The bond.
A low, restless pull under my skin.
Like it knew something I didn’t.
Kael Draven stood across the table, reading the second report that had just arrived.
His expression was unreadable.
Too still.
That was worse than anger.
“Speak,” I said quietly.
One of his commanders hesitated before stepping forward.
“Alpha Ronan has formed a war alliance,” he said. “Three packs. Eastern ridge, broken moon, and iron fang.”
The name “Iron Fang” made the room shift slightly.
Even the warriors exchanged glances.
I frowned.
“So he’s building an army,” I said.
Kael didn’t look at me.
“Yes.”
Simple.
Controlled.
Too controlled.
I stepped closer to the table.
“And you’re not worried?”
That finally made him look at me.
Not fully.
Just slightly.
“I do not lose wars,” he said.
I exhaled sharply.
“That is not an answer.”
A faint silence followed.
Then he closed the scroll slowly.
And that’s when I noticed it.
Something had changed in him.
Not his posture.
Not his voice.
His restraint.
It was thinner now.
Like something inside him had been pulled too tight for too long.
“You should not be in this room,” he said suddenly.
I blinked.
“What?”
“This is war planning.”
“I am not fragile,” I snapped.
His eyes shifted to mine.
And this time, they stayed there.
Longer.
He stepped away from the table.
Slowly.
Until he was in front of me.
Too close again.
“You are not fragile,” he said.
A pause.
Then lower.
“You are dangerous in ways you do not understand yet.”
My chest tightened slightly.
“That sounds like an insult.”
“It is not.”
His gaze dropped briefly to my wrist.
The mark.
It pulsed.
And I felt it too.
That strange pull again.
His hand lifted slowly.
Not touching me yet.
But close.
Too close.
“You feel it too,” he said.
I hesitated.
“Yes.”
That was the truth.
Kael’s jaw tightened slightly.
And then something in the room shifted.
Not the air.
Not the light.
Him.
The control.
It slipped.
Just a little.
“You are staying here,” he said.
“I am not a prisoner,” I repeated, firmer this time.
His eyes darkened.
“No,” he said quietly.
“You are worse than that.”
My breath caught.
“What does that mean?”
Kael moved.
Fast.
Not violent.
But decisive.
Before I could step back, he had already closed the space between us.
One arm came down beside my head, blocking the only exit behind me.
The table was at my back.
His body in front.
No space left.
No direction out.
My heart jumped.
“Kael…” I whispered.
His name came out softer than I intended.
That seemed to affect him.
Just slightly.
But his voice stayed steady.
“You do not leave this territory,” he said.
“That is not your decision.”
“It is now.”
A beat of silence.
Then I felt it.
The bond surged sharply.
Hot.
Unstable.
My breath hitched.
His gaze dropped to my lips for a second.
Then back to my eyes.
And I understood something very clearly.
He was holding himself back.
Barely.
“You are losing control,” I whispered.
A faint pause.
Then he answered honestly.
“Yes.”
That single word changed everything.
My pulse quickened.
“You’re admitting it?”
His hand moved slightly, brushing a strand of hair from my face.
Too gentle.
Too intimate.
“I told you before,” he said quietly.
“I do not lose control.”
A pause.
“But with you…”
His fingers stopped near my cheek.
“…I am not always myself.”
My chest tightened painfully.
Outside the hall, voices echoed.
Warriors moving.
Preparing.
The world outside was becoming louder.
Closer.
But inside this space…
It felt like something else was happening.
Something I could not name.
Kael leaned in slightly.
Not enough to kiss.
But enough to stop my breath completely.
“If Ronan reaches this territory,” he said quietly, “you do not leave my side.”
“I told you I’m not—”
“You will,” he interrupted.
Not loudly.
But completely certain.
Then he added something lower.
“Because I will not let him take what is already reacting to me.”
My heart stopped for a second.
“What am I to you?” I asked softly.
Silence.
For the first time, Kael didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes held mine.
Something unreadable flickered there.
Then he said it.
Not as Alpha.
Not as ruler.
Just him.
“You are the only thing in this war I cannot afford to lose.”
The bond inside me reacted instantly.
Strong.
Sharp.
Like it understood him before I did.
And that was when I realized it.
This wasn’t just war anymore.
It was possession.
Not from Ronan.
From him.
And I was already inside it.
Completely.
Outside the hall, a horn sounded.
Long.
Deep.
The signal of approaching borders.
Kael didn’t move away from me.
He only turned his head slightly toward the sound.
And said calmly,
“It has begun.”
But his arm stayed where it was.
Blocking me in.
Not letting me go.
And for the first time…
I wasn’t sure I wanted to run.
