Chapter 6

The Bond That Broke Control The mark on my skin was no longer just a faint trace. It was alive. Heat pulsed through my arm in waves, spreading faster with every breath I took. My vision blurred for a second as my knees weakened again, but this time, I did not fall. Because he was holding me. Kael Draven. But something about him had changed too. His grip was tighter than before. Not gentle anymore. Controlled force. Like he was holding himself together by sheer will. “Stop fighting it,” he said, voice rougher now. “I am not doing anything,” I whispered through clenched teeth. But I was lying again. Because something inside me was rising. Something I could not name. A pull. A connection. A bond that felt like it had been buried and suddenly torn open. From across the clearing, Ronan’s voice cut through the air. “She was never meant for you!” The words hit like fuel. Kael turned his head slightly. Just enough for me to see his expression shift. His control… slipping. Ronan stepped forward again, eyes locked on me now. “She is reacting because she is still tied to me,” he said. “That bond is not fully broken.” My chest tightened painfully. “No,” I whispered. But even I felt it. The old bond was cracking. And something else was replacing it. Something stronger. Kael’s hand moved from my waist to my wrist again. The moment he touched me, the mark on my skin flared. Pain and pleasure twisted together in a way that stole my breath. I gasped. Kael’s eyes darkened instantly. “That’s it,” he said quietly. “What is it?” I asked, panic rising now. He didn’t answer. Instead, his thumb pressed gently over the mark. And the world shattered. A surge exploded through my body. I cried out, collapsing fully against him. But instead of falling, I was lifted into something else. Heat. Power. Connection. Like something inside me finally snapped into place. The bond. It was fully awake now. And it was overwhelming. Kael froze. Completely. For the first time since I met him, he looked… affected. Not calm. Not controlled. Affected. His breathing changed. His hand tightened on my wrist like he was trying to stop something from spreading. But it was too late. Because I felt it too. Everything. His emotions. His restraint. His hunger. It slammed into me like a wave. I gasped again, gripping his arm. “Kael…” I whispered without meaning to. That was the breaking point. Something in him snapped. His eyes went darker. Almost feral. And then he pulled me closer. Not carefully. Not gently. Completely. My body hit his chest as his arm locked around me. Too close. Too real. Too intense. “Mine,” he said under his breath. The word wasn’t spoken to me. It was a loss of control. From him. Ronan’s roar shattered the moment. “Get away from her!” He charged. This time, Kael moved instantly. But differently. No hesitation. No restraint. Just pure force. The two Alphas collided in the center of the clearing, the impact shaking the ground beneath us. But I barely saw it. Because the bond inside me was still surging. My body felt like it was on fire. I grabbed Kael’s arm. “Stop it,” I whispered. But I didn’t know who I was talking to anymore. Kael or myself. His eyes flicked to me for a split second. And something in him shifted again. “Stay behind me,” he said, but his voice was strained now. Ronan laughed bitterly from across the clearing as he staggered back. “She is reacting to me too,” Ronan said. “You think this is over? She was mine first.” The words hit like poison. Kael’s control broke. Completely. The air around him changed. He moved faster than before. Deadlier. Ronan barely dodged the first strike. But the second landed. A brutal hit that sent him crashing into a tree. Cracks spread through the bark. Silence followed. Even I stopped breathing. Kael stood there now. Chest rising slightly. Eyes darker than anything I had seen before. Not fully human anymore. Just Alpha. Raw. Unrestrained. And then he turned to me. That was the moment everything changed. Because whatever restraint he had left… it was gone. He walked toward me slowly. Not like before. Not controlled. This time, it was instinct. Claim. Ronan tried to stand again behind him. But Kael didn’t even look back. “Touch her again,” Kael said quietly, “and I end your line tonight.” Ronan froze. But Kael wasn’t looking at him anymore. He was looking at me. And the way he looked at me now… It was dangerous. Not gentle. Not patient. Possessive. Overwhelming. The bond between us pulsed again. Harder this time. My breath hitched. “I can feel you,” I whispered. Kael stopped right in front of me. Close enough that I could not breathe properly. “I know,” he said. His voice was low. Strained. Barely controlled. His hand lifted slowly toward my face. But stopped just before touching me. Like he was holding himself back by force. “That is the problem,” he said quietly. My heart pounded. “What happens now?” I asked. A long silence. Then he answered. And his words made everything worse. “Now,” he said softly, “I don’t know if I can let you go.” Behind him, Ronan’s pack began to gather again in the distance. War was no longer coming. It had already started. And I was standing in the middle of it. Between two Alphas. Between two claims. And one bond that had just awakened completely.
