The Disappearance

Emma’s pov Six days prior to the engagement celebration Lily met with Zayn for the time. She dedicated the morning to preparing herself. She tried fifteen different outfits before choosing a designer gown that was worth more than my car. A professional styled her hair. A specialist applied her makeup. When she, at last stepped out she appeared as if she were about to meet the king of England. I was painting in my room when she arrived home three hours after. I caught the sound of her car pulling into the driveway. Heard the tapping of her heels on the marble floor, in the entryway. Heard her bedroom door shut. For some reason I set my brush aside. Decided to knock on her door. "Lily? How was it?" She was silent. "Lily?" I tested the doorknob. It was Locked. “It was okay " she spoke from, behind the door. Her tone appeared monotone. "Just fine? What was he like?" A lengthy silence. "Chilly, Emma. He's extremely extremely cold. His gaze... It’s icy. As if he looked at me yet didn’t truly notice me. As though I were another chess piece." "Maybe he was just nervous—" "Guys, like Zayn Lancaster never get anxious " she interrupted me. "They don't experience nervousness or fear or any emotion all." That's what gives them their strength." "Are you okay?" "I'm okay. Everything's alright. This is what I wished for.". Her voice lacked sincerity. "Please just leave me be, Emma. I need to get some rest." I lingered by her door briefly hearing her walk restlessly inside her room. Something had unsettled her. Something concerning Zayn Lancaster had disturbed my bold self-assured sister. Yet she refused to share what it was. For the following five days Lily immersed herself in party arrangements, with enthusiasm. She scarcely ate. She scarcely slept. She continuously planned, coordinated and refined every detail. As if achieving the party would make everything else align perfectly. I attempted to speak with her times but she consistently dismissed me. "I'm busy Emma. I have things to take care of." Two days afterward I rose early. The house was already alive with motion. Caterers arranging their setups. Florists organizing white roses. Staff hurrying about getting ready, for the two hundred attendees expected in two days. I put on my clothes. Headed downstairs to get some coffee. The house was buzzing, filled with excitement. It seemed like the moment was arriving today. Before long Lily would be formally engaged to Zayn Lancaster and our family’s future would be secured. I was going upstairs again when I caught the sound of a crash, from Lily’s room. Then yelling followed. My dad’s voice, loud and alarmed. I sprinted in the direction of the sound my pulse racing. Dad lingered at Lilys doorway his complexion utterly pale. Mom rested on the hallway floor crying uncontrollably. Employees floated close by appearing frightened. "What happened ?" I moved past Dad. Entered Lilys room. The room stood vacant. Not merely vacant because of Lily’s absence. Vacant, in a manner that caused my heart to sink. Her closet door was wide open exposing the spaces where her clothes had once been. Drawers were ajar some bare, others overflowing with clothes as if she'd packed hastily. Her suitcases, which typically rested on the shelf of her closet were no longer there. Her jewelry box lay open on the dresser the items nowhere to be seen. "Where is Lily?" I whispered softly. "Gone." Dads tone was empty, lifeless. "She disappeared sometime overnight. No message. No phone call. No reasons given. She took her clothes, her jewelry, her passport. She simply... Disappeared." Trembling I took out my phone. Dialed Lilys number. It immediately went to voicemail. I attempted to message her. Lily, where have you gone??? The notification indicated delivered but not opened. “Kindly let us know that you're alright”. Nothing. “The event takes place in two days. All are attending”. Still nothing. "We need to contact the police " Mom cried from the hallway. "She might be injured she might be taken—" "She wasn’t abducted " Dad stated bluntly. "Her clothes have vanished. Her luggage. Her passport. She orchestrated this Anne. She escaped." "The engagement celebration is just two days away!" Moms tone rose sharply. "Zayn Lancaster is awaiting a bride! Two hundred attendees have been invited! What will we do?" Dad collapsed onto Lily’s arranged bed his head buried in his hands. Never before had I witnessed my father appear vanquished. Shattered. "Its finished " he murmured. "If Lily is gone the agreement collapses. The Lancasters will retract their funding. The creditors will seize everything. Its completely finished." Mom’s crying intensified. Staff nearby murmured anxiously in the corridor. I remained standing in the center of Lily’s room my thoughts swirling. My sister had disappeared. The engagement celebration was scheduled in two days.. Somehow I sensed my life was on the verge of transforming in ways, beyond my imagination. The house grew silent after the shock subsided the stillness heavy and uneasy. The staff dispersed, murmuring quietly amongst themselves. Mom had withdrawn to her bedroom her cries resonating down the corridors. Meanwhile Dad remained in Lilys room gazing into space his phone held tightly in his trembling hand. I remained at the entrance observing him. I had never witnessed my father appear shattered so completely overcome. The man who had always seemed larger, than life, who led boardrooms and sealed million-dollar agreements now seemed like a shell. "Dad " I whispered gently. "We need to phone the guests. Cancel the celebration. There's nothing we can try." Initially he didn't reply. He simply continued gazing at Lilys closet. Then gradually he faced me. The look, on his face sent a chill down my spine. "There’s a possibility " he murmured softly. His gaze fixed on me intensely it made me instinctively recoil. "You." The words lingered in the space separating us. For an instant I believed I had misunderstood him. That my mind had somehow distorted his speech into something something absurd. "I can't comprehend " I murmured. "It's straightforward Emma." His tone intensified, becoming more resolute, with every sentence. "Lily left this family behind. She prioritized herself above all of us.. You won't do that. You will stand in for her at the engagement party. You will be Zayn Lancaster’s bride." The ground seemed to shift under my feet. "That's crazy. I can't simply act like I'm Lily. I can't wed a man I’ve never encountered—" “You have no option!" His shout filled the space causing me to recoil. "Do you grasp the consequences if we refuse to proceed with this engagement? The Lancasters will withdraw entirely. Every lender we owe will demand payment. We will forfeit this home Emma. Your mother will lose all her possessions. Within a month we’ll be homeless!” "But I’m not Lily " I exclaimed urgently. "I’m completely different, from her. Zayn Lancaster picked her, not me. He’ll be able to tell—" "The Lancaster family has encountered Lily one time " Dad cut in his voice turning more deliberate. "A single short encounter, six days back. Zayn won't recall all aspects of her appearance, her voice. You are siblings. You share the surname, the same lineage. From the Lancasters perspective they are welcoming a Monroe daughter. That's the thing that counts." I stepped back, from him my thoughts swirling. "This is deception. This is deceit directed at one of Manhattans influential families. When they discover—" "They won't discover anything if you do your role properly." Dad held my shoulders tightly making me face him. "Emma please. I understand this is a favor. I realize it's unjust but you're my sole chance, at this point. You're the person who can rescue this family." At that instant I came to recognize something I had never admitted— I had never been invisible. I was being kept .
