Sweet dessert

“Are you listening to me, Rolen?” My mother’s voice brings me back from wherever it was my mind had wandered off to this time. It takes me a minute to get my bearings. “Sorry mom, I guess I wasn’t. What were you saying?” I give her my best smile, the one she can never stay mad at. It works, she just giggles before repeating herself. “I said we were almost to Silver Moon Lake. We should really go over security for the event before we get there.” “I don’t need security, mom. I’m 21 years old and an Alpha. I’m more than capable of taking care of myself.” I really hope she isn’t going to push a security detail on me all weekend. “it’s a party mom. I can’t exactly spend my whole night surrounded by a bunch of guards.” I give her a small wink as I say, “besides what if I find my mate tonight. How would she even get a whiff of me with all those other wolf smells smothering me.” “Ha,” she chides “If all your thinking about are females you might wish for that security detail by the end of the night. There are plenty of she-wolves that would love to get their claws on the alpha prince.” She has a point. Some she-wolves can be as dangerous as a rogue attack. “What if I take Mitch with me?” I say. Mitchell Young has been my best friend since we were 3. He’s also my Beta and a damn good warrior. If things did go south, I wouldn’t want anyone else fighting by my side. “Agreed,” My mother says, a little to quickly. No doubt she had that whole thing planned out. She’s probably already convinced Mitch to give her regular updates on me all night. The car turns a corner, and the trees immediately give way to a spacious green lawn and a circular drive-in front of the packhouse. Silver Moon Lake is one of the more prominent packs in the area and their packhouse reflects it. Four stories tall with wings to either side, it’s an impressive sight. Not as big as the palace of course but it has a much homier feel to it, like it’s not just a house but a home. Mom nudges dad awake as we round the top of the drive. Dad maybe a king but he’s so down to earth it’s hard to see him as anything but a dad. He was just a gamma when they met. Dad says she smoothed out all his rough edges and made him the proper king he is today; Mom says she missed a few spots. Dad straightens himself as the car door is opened for us. Alpha Troy and Luna Elaine are waiting at the top of the stairs to greet us. I always forget how young they look, barely a gray hair between them despite being my grandmother’s age. The Alpha is a good 6 foot 4 with dark brown hair and a small scar on his left cheek from the rogue attack that killed his beta 8 years ago. If Alpha Troy is a dark horse, his Luna is his opposite in every way. Pale skinned and blonde with deep blue eyes and a loving motherly expression that instantly puts you at ease. I’ve met them both several times at the capital. They are good friends to my parents, so when we found out they had been selected to host this year’s summer solstice festival my parents had decided to visit them for a change. As we reach the top of the stairs the Alpha and Luna bow low to my mother and father. Dad of course pulls the alpha into a huge bear hug before releasing him to give the Luna a somewhat gentler hug as well. Mom smiles as she hugs each of them in turn and whispers something to the Luna that even my wolf ears can’t pick up. They both turn to stare at me so I can only guess I’m the topic of conversation. “Come, come dinner is set out back and we are all looking forward to dinning with our King and Queen.” The Alpha smiles as he leads us through the packhouse and out onto the back porch. He isn’t lying. It looks like the whole pack has turned up for the event. Visiting Alphas from neighboring packs are seated in long tables. There are more tables lining the walls and a large buffet set up to one side. Tee light candles decorate the room and white Christmas lights are hung from the poles and the balconies. More lights decorate the nearest trees as well as a small gazebo in the distance. Little white flowers are arranged in bunches around the room and a small stage is set up at the end of the porch. A table and six chairs are set up on the stage and the plates here are white porcelain trimmed in gold leaf. The alpha leads us up the steps to our seats and nods to one of the omegas to bring our meals. The food is delicious, but I can’t help but notice the Luna glancing to the empty chair on her left. The disapproving look she gives it says it was meant for her son. Clearly, there is some truth to the rumors that he is a wild card. Always partying and sleeping around is no way for a future alpha to behave. As dinner is finishing up and dessert is being brought out, I can’t help but catch a whiff of cinnamon and apples. It’s so tempting I’m half out of my chair before I realize. Mom notices my movement and leans close to my ear before whispering, “everything ok dear?” “yea sorry, guess I just can’t wait for apple pie” “Oh, I’m sorry Prince Rolen. If I’d known how much you like apple pie, I would certainly have made sure to have some but I’m afraid tonight’s dessert is a simple selection of cheesecakes, cakes, brownies and cookies,” says the Luna. “really?” I ask giving the Luna a confused look “nothing with apples and cinnamon?” “I’m sorry no. Would you like me to ask the cooks to whip something up special for you? I’m sure they would be more than happy to serve their future king?” “No that won’t be necessary.” I assure her “I think I’m just going to walk about for a bit” “Don’t forget to take Mitchell with you,” my mother chimes with a knowing smile, so much for slipping the guard detail. Not that I mind hanging with Mitch. I wave for Mitch to join me as I head off stage. After casually scoping out the dessert table, just to be sure, we grab a couple brownies and a plate of cookies before heading of to mingle. It’s rare either of us get to just hang out with people our own age and I’m looking forward to some socializing. It doesn’t take long for the she-wolves to descend on us like a pack of hungry squirrels. I just wish I wasn’t the nut.
