Elena's Pov:
The silver light disappeared as quickly as it came. One second it glowed beneath my skin. The next second it was gone completely. But the wolves stayed on the ground. Every single one of them.
I hated the way they looked at me now. Like I wasn't a person anymore. Like I was becoming something dangerous.
Rain poured heavily around us while thunder shook the sky above the forest, but somehow the silence felt louder than all of it.
My chest still hurts, I stared down at my shaking hands.
Kael stood directly beside the carriage now, staring at me with an unreadable expression. Rain dripped slowly from his dark hair while the wolves around him remained lowered to the ground.
Even the huge black wolves looked afraid.
One of the men traveling with us suddenly stepped backward. “Alpha…”
Kael didn’t look away from me.
“Say nothing.”
The command in his voice was sharp enough to cut through the storm itself.
The man immediately lowered his head. “Yes, Alpha.”
“What just happened?” I asked.
Kael finally climbed into the carriage. The moment he entered, the wolves outside slowly stood again. But they kept their distance now.
Kael shut the carriage door firmly before sitting across from me again. The lantern above us swayed softly while rain hit the roof. I waited for him to explain but he didn't as usual.
“You’re doing it again.”
His eyes lifted toward mine slowly. “Doing what?”
“You saw it,” I said shakily. “There was light under my skin.”
He still didn't say anything. My chest tightened harder.
“Why are they scared of me?”
Kael leaned back slightly against the seat.
“They’re cautious.”
“That’s not cautious!” I snapped. “They literally dropped to the ground!”
His gaze sharpened slightly.
“They bowed.”
“Why would wolves bow to me?”
I swallowed nervously.
“That’s impossible.”
Kael’s expression remained calm.
“Nothing is impossible in this world.”
I stared at him in disbelief.
“That explains absolutely nothing.”
“It’s enough for now.”
“No, it isn’t!”
The carriage shook as we started moving again through the dark forest. Outside, wolves ran beside us once more. But now they stayed farther away from my window. None of them looked directly at me anymore.
I pulled the fur cloak tighter around myself.
“What am I?” I whispered quietly.
“You’re Elena.”
“That’s not what I mean.”
His eyes stayed on mine for a long moment. Then he looked away.
“You’re tired,” he said quietly. “Sleep.”
I almost laughed.
“Sleep?”
“Yes.”
“After wolves chased us through the forest and my body started glowing?”
“You’ll think more clearly after resting.”
I glared at him.
“You really love avoiding questions.”
His jaw tightened slightly.
“And you refuse to stop asking them.”
“Because nobody tells me anything!”
The frustration in my voice cracked apart near the end. Kael watched me silently for a moment before speaking again.
“The last people who knew the truth about your bloodline ended up buried because if it.”
The words made anger flare instantly inside me.
His sharp gaze hardened slightly.
“You think knowledge changes danger?”
“Yes!”
“No.”
The answer came fast.
“You were hunted tonight without understanding why. Knowing wouldn’t have changed that.”
His words made unease speed through me painfully because part of me knew he was right. I crossed my arms angrily and looked toward the rain covered window instead.
The dark forest stretched endlessly around us. Huge trees towered over the road while fog drifted between them like ghosts. Everything about the North already felt wrong.
After a while, Kael finally spoke again.
“You should rest while you can.”
I frowned without looking at him. “Why?”
“Because once we arrive, things become harder.”
That made me turn toward him immediately.
“What does that mean?”
“You’ll understand soon enough.”
I almost screamed because every conversation with him felt like talking to a locked door.
Then suddenly the carriage tilted sharply to one side. I gasped as the lantern swung wildly overhead.
Outside, wolves growled loudly again. Kael instantly pushed the carriage door open and stepped outside.
“What now?” I muttered nervously before moving closer to the doorway.
The forest looked darker now. The storm had weakened slightly, but thick fog covered almost everything beyond the road. Several wolves stood frozen near the front of the carriage.
The men traveling with us looked tense again.
One whispered nervously, “They’re here.”
I leaned farther toward the doorway, trying to see through the fog.
At first I saw nothing, then I started seeing tall figures standing silently between the trees watching us. There were at least six of them.
A cold shiver ran down my spine.
“Kael…” I whispered.
His posture became deadly still.
The wolves beside the carriage growled low in their throats.
One of the shadow figures suddenly stepped forward slightly.
A woman with long white hair which flowed around her dark cloak while silver markings glowed faintly beneath her eyes came out and she stared directly at me.
The woman tilted her head slowly. Then she smiled.
One of Kael’s men immediately lowered his head fearfully. “Moon followers…”
Kael’s voice turned colder than ice.
“Leave.”
The woman ignored him completely. Her silver eyes stayed locked onto mine.
Kael stepped slightly in front of the carriage.
“You were warned to stay away from her.”
The woman laughed softly.
“You cannot hide the Moon Heir forever, Alpha.”
Moon Heir?
I looked sharply toward Kael.
His expression darkened dangerously.
“Enough.”
The woman smiled wider.
“She deserves the truth.”
My stomach dropped.
“What truth?” I asked.
“I’m tired of this!” I shouted. “Who am I?!”
The woman’s eyes softened strangely when she looked at me.
“You truly don’t know.”
Kael’s voice cut through the air sharply.
“Silence.”
The woman slowly looked toward him now and suddenly her smile disappeared completely. Kael’s hand moved toward the silver dagger beneath his coat.
The white haired woman looked back at me.
“When the silver crown awakens… the kingdoms will burn.”
My chest suddenly exploded with pain again. I gasped loudly and grabbed the side of the carriage.
Silver light flashed beneath my skin once more. Brighter than before and the wolves around us instantly collapsed to the ground whining painfully.
And Kael For the first time since meeting him he actually looked afraid.
