They left the restaurant and re-entered the light of a warm autumn afternoon in Rome. Walking arm in arm, they circled the block and meandered toward a construction site. Tamara noticed that the men and women in the pit didn"t look like masonry laborers, and their tools were cleaner and smaller than the shovels and other equipment she normally saw in such places. As they passed by the site, she glanced back at the work and could see light coming from an excavated cave at the bottom of the pit, near the bucket of a backhoe.
