Dinner is as delicious as Gavin promised, and even Evie tries a little salad, though she mostly picks out the pears and leaves the cabbage behind. Marian asks Brody questions he’s sure she already knows the answers to—how he met Gavin, how his art show went, what he’s working on at the moment. Her gaze continually drifts to his arms, and at one point, she asks how extensive his tattoos are. With a nod from Gavin, Brody stands and pulls up his shirt to show her.
“Don’t forget the unicorn!” Evie cries. Brody turns so Marian can see the images on his back, and her daughter explains, “It’s a Chinese unicorn, so that’s why it looks like a dragon. Brody says I have to wait until I get older to get a real tattoo myself.”
