AS SOON AS TOM walked into the room, Noah’s mother said, “Did he make it up the stairs all right?”
“Yes, Ma’am, but it wore him out. He’s in bed, and if you want to say good night you probably don’t have long. I suspect he’ll be sound asleep fairly quickly.”
“In that case,” she said, “if you folks will excuse me, I’ll go next door for a minute.”
When enough time had elapsed for her to be out of earshot, Henry said, “Her attitude toward you, or more particularly you and Noah, seems to have undergone a transformation.”
“True,” he said, “and you can thank your grandmother for that.” He explained what had happened and Mrs. Webster’s apology.
