It seemed the reefs around the most populated Hawaiian Islands had been overfished, and as a result, fishing boats from those islands had been attempting to harvest the local reefs too here on Moloka’i. It was exploitation of the worst kind, since Moloka‘i’s fishermen had done their best to be conservative in what they took. With limited resources, sustainability was equivalent to survival.
