Ahead of her, the trail left the grasslands of the river’s delta and plunged into the dark forest. She glanced back at the ocean and was relieved that the Aggressor was nowhere to be seen. Suddenly the ground shifted, and a deep vibration ran through her body. Eva turned to Thomas. “Did you feel that?” she asked. Thomas nodded and kept running. Eva increased her speed, flying up the trail beside him. Yet even as she ran for her life, she sent up a silent prayer—that her mother was getting Soledad and Luis Junior somewhere safe, and that Taffy was following Axel’s directions and getting her pod far out to sea.
