The tour of BCI was only for Eva and Caleb, but Sarah joined them in the Zodiac, saying she wanted to speak to some of the scientists at the facility. Rounding out the group were the Zodiac pilot and a Coast Guard police officer who would serve as their security detail.
As they crossed the short distance to Barro Colorado Island, Eva found herself very much looking forward to the excursion. She’d read a great deal about this research enclave where scientists from elite universities spent sabbaticals, and she’d even read a book, The Tapir’s Morning Bath, written by a journalist who’d worked as a field assistant here, but she’d never imagined she’d visit such a place herself—and on Earth Day, no less.
