Chapter 6: The Birthday Invitation The morning air was crisp, carrying the faint hum of early chatter as students shuffled through the corridors. The day felt heavier somehow, the memory of yesterday lingering like static in Lily’s nerves. She and Chloe walked together, the usual banter between them muted, each lost in their own thoughts. Lily’s mind replayed Xander’s gaze, the smoldering intensity, and that brief, electric touch that had left her breathless the night before. She tried to shake it off, telling herself it was just a moment, a fleeting spark—but the pull lingered. She couldn’t stop thinking about him. As they rounded the corner to the main hall, the crowd seemed to part just enough for Lily to catch sight of him. Xander was standing with Kelvin and Timothy, leaning against the lockers with that lazy, dangerous smirk she had learned to recognize immediately. His dark eyes found hers in an instant, and a shiver ran down her spine. “Morning,” he called smoothly, voice carrying over the noise. Lily blinked, stomach fluttering, cheeks warm. “M-Morning,” she stammered, her voice barely audible. “Don’t look so nervous,” he teased, stepping closer. “I just wanted to say… you two are invited to my birthday tonight. My apartment. Don’t be late.” Chloe’s eyes widened, sparkling with excitement. “Your birthday? Tonight? Seriously?” “Yes,” Xander said, smirk widening. “Consider this a personal invitation. Not that it’s a suggestion.” His gaze lingered on Lily just a heartbeat too long before he turned, his presence commanding the attention of those nearby as he walked off. Whispers rippled through the hallway instantly, spreading like wildfire. Lily felt the heat in her cheeks deepen—not just from embarrassment but from the sudden thrill of being singled out by him. Students paused, glanced, and murmured to each other, catching the significance of Xander personally inviting them. The mere mention of his name made them stop and stare. “That’s… wow,” Chloe breathed, a grin tugging at her lips. “You two are going to be the talk of the school by lunch.” Lily’s pulse raced, half excitement, half dread. She wanted to refuse, to ignore the attention, but a magnetic pull she couldn’t deny made her nod. “We’ll go,” she whispered. As if on cue, a familiar, high-pitched voice cut through the hallway, dripping with venomous sweetness. “Well, well, well…” Lily froze as she recognized the voice. It belonged to Xander’s ex Rosa, the cheerleading captain, her long blonde hair catching the light like a halo of calculated perfection. She was flanked by her friend, striding toward them with the confidence of someone who owned the space around her. Every head turned as she approached, whispers multiplying, eyes snapping to the tension between the four of them. “Well, isn’t this… interesting?” Rosa said, voice laced with faux innocence. Her blue eyes flicked between Lily, Chloe, and Xander, who had paused a few steps away. “Xander, inviting them personally? How… unusual.” Chloe stepped slightly in front of Lily, protective, jaw tight. “We weren’t trying to cause trouble,” she said firmly. The cheerleader smirked, ignoring her. “Oh, I’m sure you weren’t. But isn’t it funny how certain people suddenly get all the attention?” Her gaze sharpened, landing on Lily with an almost predatory intensity. “Especially during birthdays. Everyone loves to be noticed, don’t they?” Lily felt a twist in her stomach. The girl’s presence was calculated, deliberately intimidating, and everyone around them seemed to lean forward, waiting for the confrontation. Xander, however, didn’t flinch. Instead, he stepped closer, his dark eyes narrowing slightly, the smirk on his lips curling with a dangerous edge. “They’re invited,” he said flatly, voice low enough to carry an unspoken warning. “No one else’s opinion matters.” Rosa's smile faltered for just a heartbeat before it returned, flirtingly she moved closer to Xander attempting to touch him, "but Xander I...." she started, moving closer to him, "stay away from me" Xander shouted while pushing her away from him to the ground".Her smile faltered, her eyes turned sharper and colder.“We’ll see about that,” she said while standing, voice dripping with challenge, before turning and walking away not before throwing Lily and Chloe a dirty look. Her friends whispering something into her ear while they walked away. Students gossiped quietly, glancing back at the group as the tension settled like smoke in the hallway. Lily exhaled, trying to steady her pulse. She felt Chloe’s hand on her arm, grounding her. “Don’t let her get to you,” Chloe said softly, voice almost drowned by the murmurs around them. “I… I’m trying,” Lily admitted, heat rising to her cheeks. She could feel Xander’s gaze on her, intense and unwavering, and it made her heart pound in a way that was both thrilling and terrifying. The rest of the day was a blur. Whispers followed them through the hallways, students leaning close to share gossip about who was invited to Xander’s birthday, and who had been seen standing too close to him. Lily’s crush Daniel, the one who once made a move on her before but she turned him down, watched from a distance, jaw tight, eyes dark with jealousy. He had pestered her for weeks, hoping to claim her attention, and now Xander’s public claim of her left him powerless and furious. During lunch, Chloe and Lily found a quiet corner, though the space was far from private. Students passed by, glancing with curiosity, whispering as they went. Lily felt the weight of eyes on her, the buzz of Xander’s name everywhere she moved. “You okay?” Chloe asked, concern in her tone. “I… I think so,” Lily said, though her voice was uncertain. “It’s just… him. The way he looks at me. The way he acts… it’s like nothing else matters except me.” Chloe’s grin was gentle, teasing. “Well, enjoy it while it lasts. Not everyone gets a personal invite from Xander.” The afternoon dragged, and by the time the final bell rang, the entire school was buzzing. The cheerleader’s announcement had been subtle but effective: a casual mention in passing that Xander’s birthday party would be tonight, and that he had personally invited “certain” students, had sent the rumor mill into overdrive. As Lily and Chloe walked home, the city streets alive with the hum of evening traffic, Lily felt a strange mix of excitement and nervous anticipation. The pull of Xander’s world, the thrill of his attention, and the unknown waiting at his apartment tonight made her pulse race. Chloe linked arms with her, sensing the tension radiating off her friend. “This is going to be wild,” she said with a grin. “And just think… we get to see him up close, without the whole school watching.” Lily nodded, heart fluttering. She didn’t know what the night would hold, didn’t know how Xander would act in the privacy of his apartment, but she knew one thing: the storm between them wasn’t slowing down. It was building, growing, and she was caught right in the middle of it. By the time they arrived at the entrance of Xander’s building, the lights of the city stretching beneath them like a blanket of stars, Lily felt a thrill she hadn’t expected. The night ahead promised danger, desire, and a tangled web of emotions she couldn’t escape. Chloe squeezed her hand, a silent anchor. “Ready?” she whispered, eyes sparkling. Lily took a deep breath, summoning courage she wasn’t sure she had. “Ready,” she said, though her voice carried more uncertainty than conviction. Her heart was pounding, her thoughts a whirlwind of anticipation and fear, and yet… she couldn’t wait.
