“So I was right, wasn’t I?” Evelyn’s voice was calm now, no longer trembling. She lifted her gaze, locking eyes with Lily.
“The incident where Elma accused me of leaking confidential information from Kane Corporation… the very reason I was handed over to Theo as some sick ‘apology’… you had a part in that too, didn’t you?”
Her words were like daggers, sharp and merciless.
Lily’s last line of defense crumbled.
Her face turned pale. She knows. Not just her name, but even the carefully buried secret she thought no one could ever uncover.
“I… I didn’t do it on my own!” Lily broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. Her voice cracked in desperation. “It was Miss Elma! She told me to! I leaked the files… it was me! And today—drugging you, pushing you—it was all her! I swear!”
Like a drowning person clinging to the last straw, she desperately gestured toward the inside pocket of her blouse with her bound hands.
Evelyn slowly reached toward her coat pocket and pressed pause on the recorder she had hidden—one she had picked up on the way to the hotel.
And then—
BANG!
The suite door flew open violently!
Kane stormed in, his face cold and unreadable. Behind him stood Elma, her expression twisted into a smug smirk, as if she was about to enjoy the grand finale of a perfectly orchestrated scandal.
But the scene in front of her—
Lily tied up. Crying. Evelyn calm and composed.
Elma’s victorious expression froze instantly.
What the hell?!
Why was Lily restrained? And crying?
She wasn’t supposed to be caught!
Panic gripped her, but she quickly masked it. She couldn’t lose control now.
“Betty? Theo? What… what’s going on here?” she forced out, her tone laced with confusion and concern.
But before Evelyn could respond, Theo stepped forward lazily, his voice dripping with mockery as he clapped slowly.
“Miss Elma, your acting could put Broadway stars to shame.”
He moved closer, like a predator circling his prey.
“But unfortunately, your maid just gave a very moving confession. About the drug in my drink. About your little scheme to lure Betty here. Care to explain?”
Elma’s face drained of all color. She staggered back a step, eyes darting in panic.
“Theo, how can you believe the words of a pathetic servant? She’s obviously been bribed to frame me! Kane, don’t listen to them! They’re working together!”
She turned to Kane desperately, her voice trembling.
That’s when Evelyn took a step forward.
Her long lashes trembled like fragile butterfly wings. And when she lifted her gaze, her eyes shimmered with unshed tears.
“Elma…” Her voice was choked with pain, trembling with disbelief.
“I always thought of you as my closest friend. You were there for me when I was at my lowest. I trusted you with everything.”
A single tear slid down her cheek. Her tone was heartbreakingly soft.
“But I never imagined you’d betray me like this… Framing me. Sending Lily to destroy me again. Why? What did I ever do to deserve this?”
Despite the truth burning inside her, Evelyn’s expression was the perfect blend of sorrow and vulnerability. Her voice, her tears, her trembling lips—all so painfully sincere that even Theo raised a brow in admiration.
Kane, meanwhile, stood motionless, his brows furrowed deep. The contrast between Evelyn’s wounded sincerity and Elma’s obvious panic was striking—and impossible to ignore.
Elma’s composure shattered completely.
“No! I didn’t do any of that!” she shrieked, her voice hysterical. “She’s lying! She and Theo planned this! Kane, you have to believe me!”
Evelyn didn’t flinch. Slowly, she reached into her pocket and pulled out the tiny voice recorder. Her fingers trembled, as if the object was unbearably heavy.
She looked up at Kane, eyes filled with silent sorrow.
“Kane… maybe you should hear it yourself. This… this is what Lily confessed just now.”
She pressed play.
Lily’s sobbing voice echoed through the room—raw, terrified, and unmistakably real.
Every word was like a slap in the face.
And Elma—she couldn’t stop it.
“No… that’s not true! It’s all lies!” Elma screamed. She lunged at Kane, trying to grab his arm. “She’s doing this because she’s jealous! She’s always been jealous of me!”
“Enough.”
Kane’s voice wasn’t loud—but it was final. Cold. Like a blade slicing through the chaos.
He yanked his arm away from her grasp, his eyes filled with nothing but disgust and disappointment.
Evelyn knew then—Elma had lost.
She stepped forward again, still feigning fragility, but her tone was crystal clear.
“If you really didn’t do anything, then it’s simple, isn’t it?”
She turned to Kane.
“We can check the hotel surveillance. The woman who led me to this room—was she working with Elma? Who let her in? It should all be there.”
Elma swayed on her feet, blood draining from her face.
Kane watched her carefully. He didn’t need surveillance footage. Her reaction said everything.
Everything he believed. Every ounce of trust. All the so-called purity and kindness—
It was all a lie.
And he’d been a fool.
His gaze shifted to Evelyn, filled with a storm of emotions—regret, guilt, anger.
He closed his eyes, drew a deep breath, and when he opened them, the warmth was gone. Only steel remained.
“Elma.” His voice was like thunder right before the storm breaks.
“From this moment on, you are no longer welcome in the Langston household. I won’t believe another word from your mouth. Leave. Now.”
Elma’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with disbelief.
“Kane, no! You can’t mean that!” she cried, her voice breaking. But he didn’t look at her again.
Crushed. Humiliated. She stumbled out of the suite like a shadow of her former self.
Silence fell like a heavy curtain in the aftermath.
Only Evelyn remained, calm now… but victorious.
