Chapter 3: The Secrets We Keep The days following Kael’s abrupt departure were a haze of confusion and longing for Lila. She replayed their moments together on an endless loop—the intensity of his kiss, the vulnerability in his eyes, the cryptic warning he’d left behind. She hadn’t seen or heard from him since that night on the beach, and her frustration grew with each passing hour. She told herself she didn’t need answers, that she could let it go and move on. But the truth was inescapable: she couldn’t get Kael out of her mind. By the fourth day, she decided she couldn’t wait any longer. If Kael wouldn’t come to her, she’d find him herself. Meridon wasn’t a big town, but Kael’s ability to vanish made it feel impossibly vast. She started with the obvious places—the bar where they’d shared their first drink, the market square where travelers sometimes gathered, even the library where she worked. But Kael was nowhere to be found. Frustrated but determined, Lila followed a hunch that led her to the outskirts of town. Beyond the cobblestone streets and quaint houses lay the forest—a sprawling, ancient expanse that few dared to explore. The locals whispered stories about strange occurrences in those woods: ghostly lights, disembodied voices, even sightings of creatures that defied explanation. Lila wasn’t sure she believed the rumors, but the forest called to her in a way she couldn’t ignore. And so, with nothing but a flashlight and her resolve, she stepped into the shadows. The forest was alive with sounds—branches creaking in the wind, leaves rustling underfoot, the distant hoot of an owl. The air was cool and damp, carrying the earthy scent of moss and pine. Lila’s flashlight cut through the darkness, but the further she ventured, the less sure she felt about her decision. She was just about to turn back when she heard it—a low, guttural growl that sent a shiver down her spine. “Hello?” she called, her voice trembling. No response came, but the growling grew louder. It wasn’t human, of that she was certain, but it wasn’t like any animal she’d ever heard either. Heart pounding, she turned to leave, but her path was suddenly blocked. “Lila.” The voice was low and familiar, and when she turned, there he was—Kael. But something about him was… off. His eyes, usually so stormy and expressive, glowed faintly in the darkness. His posture was rigid, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said, his voice strained. “I could say the same to you,” she shot back, relief and anger mixing in her chest. “You disappeared without a word. I’ve been searching everywhere for you.” Kael closed the distance between them in a single step, his expression torn between concern and frustration. “I left for a reason, Lila. You have no idea what you’ve walked into.” “Then explain it to me,” she demanded, planting her hands on her hips. “Stop shutting me out. I deserve the truth, Kael.” For a moment, he hesitated, his gaze flickering to the darkness around them. Then, with a heavy sigh, he gestured for her to follow. “Fine. But not here. It’s not safe.” Kael led her deeper into the woods, his movements silent and purposeful. Lila’s fear began to wane, replaced by curiosity and the faint hope that she’d finally get the answers she craved. They emerged into a small clearing, where the moonlight bathed everything in a silvery glow. Kael stopped near the edge of a fallen tree, his shoulders tense as he turned to face her. “Lila,” he began, his voice soft but firm. “There are things about me—about this world—that you aren’t ready for. I’ve tried to keep you safe, but you’re too stubborn to let this go.” “Safe from what?” she asked, stepping closer. “Kael, I’m not afraid of you. Whatever it is, just tell me.” He ran a hand through his hair, his jaw clenching as if the words physically pained him. “You should be afraid. Because I’m not what you think I am.” “What does that mean?” Kael exhaled sharply, his gaze locking onto hers. “It means I’m not human, Lila. Not entirely.” The words hung in the air, impossible and yet undeniable. Lila’s mind raced, trying to process what he was saying. “Not… human?” she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper. He nodded, his expression grim. “I’m something else. Something ancient, powerful—and dangerous.” Lila’s instinct was to laugh, to dismiss his words as some kind of joke. But the look in his eyes stopped her. This was real, and it terrified him. “Prove it,” she said, her voice steadier than she felt. Kael hesitated, his muscles tensing as he looked away. “I don’t want to scare you.” “Kael, I’m already scared,” she admitted. “But I need to know the truth.” With a reluctant nod, Kael stepped back, his body seeming to ripple as he drew in a deep breath. His eyes glowed brighter, his features sharpening as his humanity faded. Then, before Lila’s astonished eyes, he transformed. The man she knew was replaced by something otherworldly—a creature with jet-black fur, razor-sharp claws, and eyes that burned like embers. He was both terrifying and mesmerizing, a primal force of nature that defied logic. Lila’s breath caught, but she didn’t run. Instead, she stepped closer, her eyes wide with wonder. “Kael?” The creature growled softly, its massive frame trembling as if fighting to maintain control. Then, slowly, it began to shift back, and within moments, Kael stood before her once more, his chest heaving with exertion. “That’s what I am,” he said quietly, his voice filled with shame. “That’s why I tried to stay away.” Lila stared at him, her mind racing. She should have been terrified, but all she felt was an overwhelming need to understand him. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” she asked, her voice breaking. “Because I didn’t want to lose you,” Kael admitted, his gaze pleading. “I thought I could protect you by keeping my distance. But I was wrong.” “You don’t have to protect me, Kael,” she said, stepping closer. “I’m not going anywhere.” The tension in his shoulders eased, and for the first time, a flicker of hope crossed his face. “You don’t know what you’re saying, Lila. Being with me comes with risks you can’t imagine.” “Then we’ll face them together,” she said firmly. Kael stared at her for a long moment, his expression softening. “You’re braver than anyone I’ve ever known,” he said, his voice filled with awe. “And you’re not as scary as you think,” she replied with a small smile. For the first time in days, Kael allowed himself to smile back.
