Chapter 6: Beneath The Blood Moon The cabin stood silent beneath the blood moon, its crimson glow casting eerie shadows over the forest. Lila sat by the small fireplace, her fingers curled around a chipped mug of tea that had long since gone cold. Kael paced near the window, his sharp eyes scanning the tree line for any sign of movement. “They’re coming, aren’t they?” Lila asked softly, breaking the silence that had settled between them. Kael didn’t answer immediately. His shoulders were tense, his body coiled like a spring ready to snap. Finally, he turned to face her, his expression grim. “Yes. It’s only a matter of time now.” Lila’s stomach twisted with dread, but she refused to let fear consume her. She had spent the past few days preparing herself for this moment, knowing it was inevitable. If Kael believed in her strength, then she would believe in it too. “What do they want?” she asked, her voice steady. Kael sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. “Me. My blood, my power. They think they can take it, twist it, use it to make themselves stronger. And they’ll kill anyone who stands in their way.” “Including me,” Lila said quietly. Kael’s jaw tightened. “Not if I can help it.” The first sign of the enemy’s arrival came just after midnight. A low, guttural howl echoed through the forest, sending a chill down Lila’s spine. She moved to Kael’s side, her heart pounding as she scanned the darkness outside the window. “They’re here,” Kael said, his voice a low growl. “What do we do?” “We fight,” he replied, his gaze hardening. “But we don’t fight alone.” Before Lila could ask what he meant, Kael stepped outside and tilted his head back, letting out a bone-chilling howl that seemed to shake the very air around them. Moments later, the forest came alive with movement as shadowy figures emerged from the trees. Lila’s breath caught as she realized they weren’t human. Wolves—larger and more feral than any she had ever seen—circled the cabin, their glowing eyes fixed on Kael. But these weren’t enemies. They bowed their heads in deference, their loyalty to Kael unmistakable. “They’re… yours?” Lila asked, her voice filled with awe. Kael nodded, his expression unreadable. “They’re my pack. And they’ll fight for us.” The battle began with a sudden, deafening roar. A group of Kael’s enemies emerged from the shadows, their forms shifting into monstrous hybrids of man and beast. The air crackled with tension as the two sides clashed, the sounds of snarls and cries echoing through the night. Kael moved like a force of nature, his strength and speed unmatched as he tore through the attackers. Lila watched in stunned silence, her heart racing as she tried to make sense of the chaos around her. But she didn’t have time to process it. One of the creatures broke away from the fight, its glowing eyes locking onto her. It lunged forward, its claws outstretched, and Lila barely had time to react. Kael intercepted the creature in a blur of motion, his claws sinking into its chest. He threw it to the ground with a snarl, his eyes blazing with fury. “Stay behind me!” he barked, his voice raw with desperation. “I can help!” Lila protested, but Kael shook his head. “Not this time. Please, Lila. Stay safe.” The battle raged on, the night growing darker and bloodier with each passing moment. Despite Kael’s warnings, Lila couldn’t stand idly by. She grabbed a makeshift weapon—a heavy branch from the firewood pile—and steeled herself. When another attacker broke through the line, she swung with all her strength, striking the creature across the head. It stumbled, stunned, giving Kael just enough time to finish it off. Kael turned to her, his expression a mix of anger and admiration. “You’re impossible,” he muttered, a small, reluctant smile tugging at his lips. “And you love it,” she replied, her voice trembling but defiant. The tide of the battle began to turn as Kael and his pack pushed the attackers back. But just as victory seemed within reach, a new figure emerged from the shadows—a towering, menacing figure with an aura of pure malice. “Kael,” the figure said, his voice dripping with disdain. “You’ve been a thorn in my side for far too long.” Kael stepped forward, his body tense. “Ronan,” he said, his tone cold. “I was wondering when you’d show your face.” Ronan smirked, his eyes flicking to Lila. “And who’s this? Your little pet?” Kael’s growl was low and dangerous. “Don’t touch her.” Ronan laughed, a chilling sound that sent shivers down Lila’s spine. “Oh, Kael. Always so protective. But you can’t protect her forever.” With that, Ronan lunged, and the two clashed in a brutal, frenzied fight. Lila watched in horror as they traded blows, their movements too fast for her to follow. The fight was evenly matched, but Ronan had one advantage—his willingness to play dirty. He feinted left, then struck Kael with a devastating blow that sent him crashing to the ground. “Kael!” Lila screamed, her heart lurching in her chest. Ronan turned to her, his eyes gleaming with triumph. “Your turn, little girl.” Lila’s grip tightened on her makeshift weapon, her fear giving way to a surge of determination. She raised the branch, ready to defend herself, but before Ronan could reach her, Kael rose with a roar. With one final, ferocious attack, Kael drove his claws into Ronan’s chest. The enemy leader let out a choked gasp, his eyes wide with shock as he crumpled to the ground. The forest fell silent, the remaining attackers retreating into the shadows. Kael stood over Ronan’s lifeless body, his chest heaving as he struggled to catch his breath. “It’s over,” he said, his voice hoarse. Lila ran to him, throwing her arms around his neck. “You did it,” she whispered, tears streaming down her face. “We did it,” Kael corrected, his arms wrapping tightly around her.
