Damien was already in his office when she got there, his typical air of power and authority enveloping him like a solid barrier.
Calmly, without taking his eyes off the papers before him, he replied, "You're late."
Evelyn did not answer the question. Instead, she took a deep breath, walked across the room, and stopped at the edge of his desk.
She gave a firm and determined response, saying, "I'll accept your offer."
Damien looked up, raising an eyebrow in astonishment. For the first time, there was a spark of something in his eyes, like approval, or maybe something more profound.
With a backward tilt, he continued, "Miss Carter, you made a wise decision." "You'll discover that there are benefits to my world."
“I’m not interested in rewards, Damien,” Evelyn replied. “I’m here to make sure The Haven survives. And if that means playing by your rules, then so be it. But I’ll be watching you. Every step of the way.”
Damien’s smirk returned, but there was something new in it—respect, perhaps.
“We’ll see how long that lasts, Evelyn. But I’m looking forward to working with you.”
Evelyn turned on her heel, her heart pounding as she walked out of his office. She had made her choice. Now, she would have to live with the consequences.
But she was ready. She had to be.
For The Haven. For the children. For herself.
Evelyn experienced an odd mix of relief and worry as she left Damien's office. Although she had made her decision, the consequences had not yet completely subsided. Now that the doors to Damien's realm were opened, she found herself trapped in a game she wasn't entirely sure she understood.
It was a hazy ride back to her apartment. Evelyn's thoughts were elsewhere, repeating the talk with Damien and analyzing every word and glance as the city streets passed in flashes of steel and neon. What had seemed like an opportunity to save The Haven now felt like a step into a labyrinth.
She hadn’t expected Damien to be so... alluring, and it unsettled her. His sharp intelligence, his effortless charm, his ability to make her question her own convictions. She had seen enough, though, to realize that he was dangerous in spite of all. He played the game to win, and there was no getting away from him once he had you in his sights.
She dropped her handbag on the counter and shut the door as soon as she got home.
Damien had left her another message when her phone buzzed.
I’ll have the contract drawn up. We can finalize everything tomorrow.
With her finger hovering over the screen, Evelyn gazed at the message. Now there was no turning back. The choice was made. She held the key to the Haven's future, but now Damien's whims now held sway.
She massaged her temples, attempting to ignore the headache that was starting to develop.
She was startled by a knock at the door.
She had no expectations. She sighed as she walked across the room and opened the door, half expecting to find an unwelcome visitor or a delivery.
But it wasn’t a delivery.
It was Rachel.
The only person who truly understood the magnitude of her situation was her best friend.
Without waiting for an invitation, Rachel entered and remarked, "You look like you've seen a ghost." She raised an eyebrow after glancing at Evelyn's face. "What took place?"
Evelyn was so tired that she didn't try to hide it. She replied softly, as though stating it out loud would make it seem more genuine, "I made a deal with Damien Blackwood."
Rachel blinked in surprise. “Wait. You’re serious?”
Evelyn nodded, sinking onto the couch. “I had no choice. The Haven needs the money, and this is the only way to get it.”
Rachel sat down beside her, her expression turning serious. “I get it. The Haven’s in trouble. But this... Damien Blackwood? He’s ruthless, Evelyn. I don’t want to see you get caught in his web.”
Evelyn knew Rachel was right. She was aware of the stories that Damien had twisted everyone around him to achieve his goals and that no one had ever prevailed after interacting with him. But right now, she couldn't afford to give that much thought.
Even she thought the words sounded phony, but she said, "I'll be careful." "I refuse to allow him to rule me. I can handle it.”
Rachel studied her for a moment before speaking again. “Just promise me you’ll watch your back. People like Damien don’t make deals for the sake of charity. There’s always a price.”
Evelyn exhaled, her hands trembling slightly. “I know. But I have to try.”
Rachel leaned back, her gaze softening. “I get it, Ev. But remember, I'm here no matter what happens. You don't have to work alone on this.
Evelyn felt a glimmer of appreciation for the first time since she had made the choice. In the middle of the impending storm, Rachel's assistance was a lifeline.
Evelyn sat in the quiet apartment after Rachel gone, gazing out the window at the city lights. Though her mind was racing, she was adamant that she would not allow herself to become engrossed in Damien's world, regardless of what happened next. She would stand up for the children who relied on her, for The Haven, and on her own terms.
The next day, as promised, Damien’s assistant called to arrange the final meeting. The contract would be ready for her to sign.
As Evelyn got ready for the meeting, she couldn't help but feel a feeling of dread beginning to set in. She took great care in her attire, selecting a sleek, polished, and authoritative ensemble that felt like armor. She was aware that the stakes had never been higher.
Damien was waiting for her in his office, his presence as commanding as ever. There was a noticeable sense of tension in the room, and Evelyn briefly felt the full impact of her choice.
As she walked in, Damien stood there, looking at her with that knowing look that made her skin tingle. "Miss Carter, I'm happy to see you're still on board."
Evelyn took a deep breath, walking confidently toward his desk. “Let’s get this over with,” she said.
She accepted the contract from Damien as his fingers brushed hers. She felt a shock of electricity from his contact, and for a few second, she questioned whether she was already in over her head.
She rapidly skimmed the clauses as she looked down at the paper. There were no warning signs or clear traps, and everything appeared to be in order. Nevertheless, her gut told her to exercise caution.
“Are you sure you’ve read it thoroughly?” Damien asked, his voice low, almost teasing.
Evelyn met his gaze. “I know how to read a contract, Mr. Blackwood.”
He smiled, but there was something dark in the way his lips curled. “Of course. Just making sure.”
She didn’t hesitate. She signed.
The deal was sealed. And as she handed the contract back to him, Evelyn felt a strange sensation rise in her chest—a mixture of dread and anticipation. She had no idea what's coming next, but she knew one thing for certain:
This was just the beginning.
