He thought of just leaving with Angela but he didn't figure she would be too happy to wake up and find that he'd let her friends die.
Xavier had probably left the guards to stall him so he wouldn't find him. But he couldn't care less about finding Xavier. All he wanted was to get Angela to safety so she could heal comfortably.
