Chapter 5

The desserts scattered across the floor and the blood soaking the ground became a nightmare that haunted her for the rest of her life. From that day on, she never touched sweets again. What she had never expected was that, in the end, she was the only one who had remained trapped in that nightmare all these years. Just then, Olivia called out to her. "Sis…" She pressed a bottle of melatonin into Nora's hand. "I heard from Liam that you have heart palpitations. You probably won't be sleeping well in detention either, so I went to three different stores to find you the best melatonin!" As she spoke, she held the box of desserts out in front of Nora, then leaned in close to her ear. Smiling like a venomous snake, sweet and cloying, she whispered, "Nora, the desserts you like are delicious. And your man is very useful too." "So what if you saved his life? So what if you risked everything for him for eight years? To Liam, you're nothing but a madwoman. In his eyes, all your pleading means less than one little pout from me." "You'd better keep your temper under control while you're in jail. When you get out, try behaving like a decent person." Nora trembled with rage and hurled the bottle straight at Olivia's face. "Get lost!" Tears instantly welled up in Olivia's eyes. She shrank behind Liam like a startled doe. "Liam… I was only trying to help Nora sleep better. I'm still injured, and I came all this way just to bring her medicine. What did I do wrong?" Nora was about to lunge at her again, but Liam stepped in front of Olivia and blocked her path. "Nora, Olivia meant well. Don't be so ungrateful." Nora had barely opened her mouth to retort when a police officer cut them off impatiently and shoved her forward. "That's enough. Move!" Curled in Liam's arms, Olivia's eyes shifted slightly. "Liam, she's so crazy, and she holds grudges. Once she gets out, she'll definitely try to kill me. Keeping her here for just a few days won't be enough to teach her a lesson. Liam, can I pay the guards to make sure she never dares take revenge on me again?" Nora bit down on her lip and silently counted her heartbeat. One. Two. Three… At last, when she reached fourteen, Liam said softly, "As long as it makes you happy." Olivia took out a thick wad of cash and smiled viciously. "As long as you take good care of her in there, money won't be a problem." The seven days Nora spent in detention were brutal. Countless eyes watched her at all times. On the first day, another detainee tried to force her to scrub a toilet with her own toothbrush. Nora drove an elbow into her and slammed her head straight into the bowl. On the second day, someone spat into her food tray. Nora gave a cold laugh and flipped the entire tray right into that person's face. But once Olivia had paved the way with money, Nora's resistance meant nothing. All it did was stir up everyone's anger. By the sixth day, in the dead of night, someone seized her by the throat and smashed her head against the wall. "You dared mess with Mr. Bennett's woman, and you still dared fight back? You've got a death wish!" "Mrs. Brooks said you needed to learn your lesson. Beat her to death!" Fists and kicks rained down on her head, her stomach, and her chest without mercy. For three straight hours, they did not stop until she was vomiting blood all over the floor. Only then did they finally leave in a panic. Staring up at the bleak gray ceiling of the detention center, Nora suddenly remembered the night she and Liam got married. That very night, a rival faction had come to seize their territory. Men with knives had stormed into the place where they were staying. Liam had been covered in blood, but from beginning to end, he had stood in front of her, shielding her with his body. He had held her hand, his eyes so full of love it had nearly spilled over. "Nora, I'll protect you for the rest of my life. I want you by my side forever." And now, just to please another woman, he had personally sent her into detention and turned her into a tool for others to vent their rage on. Nora truly hated him. She hated the lifetime Liam had once promised her, a lifetime that had turned out to be only eight years long. And she hated him even more for being so cruel—so cruel that he had left her alone in the past.
