Chapter 6

831 Words
Seven days later, Nora's detention finally came to an end. Bruised all over, she stumbled out through the gates. Liam's assistant was waiting at the entrance with a medical kit in hand. "Mrs. Bennett, please get in." Nora hesitated for a moment, but in the end, she got into the car. What she had not expected was that the person the assistant brought her to see would be Olivia. A high-rise apartment in downtown Stonevale. Dressed in a silk robe, Olivia lounged against a recliner by the floor-to-ceiling window and gave Nora a lazy glance. "Nora, do you know why I asked you to come?" She rested a hand on her belly. "I'm pregnant with Liam's child. I'm already three months along." "Your last baby didn't make it, but it stayed in your womb for seven months, didn't it? Then you should know what kind of food is good for a woman at this stage of pregnancy. Go make me a pot of soup and let me see how it tastes." Nora let out a mocking laugh. "What makes you think I'd wait on you? Don't be ridiculous." She turned to leave, but Olivia's shrill laughter rang out behind her. "You can leave, of course. But… Isla's not dead yet, is she?" Nora stopped dead in her tracks. It felt as though the blood in her veins had frozen instantly. A moment later, she walked into the kitchen. She had compromised completely. That night, Olivia took pictures of Nora cooking, then posted a photo of herself with Liam on i********:. In the photo, Liam looked exactly the way he had when Nora was pregnant. He would blow on each spoonful of soup until it cooled, then feed it to her himself. He would carefully study pregnancy meal plans, wash her feet, and brush her hair. He would even press his cheek gently to her belly and speak to the baby with eyes full of tenderness… Back then, Nora had always said he would make a wonderful father one day. What she had never imagined was that he would give another woman every last bit of the tenderness he had once given her, and that he would become the father of another woman's child. But by now, her heart had already gone numb. Not even this could stir the slightest ripple in it anymore. Nora closed i********: and went back to contacting people who might be able to get Isla out of the city. At last, an hour later, she reached an old associate of hers. The person agreed to have Isla flown out by helicopter at ten the next night, avoiding Bennett Group's sphere of influence the entire way. The huge weight on Nora's chest finally lifted. It was the only good news she had received in a long time. Once she relaxed, she fell asleep quickly. But in the middle of the night, the bedroom door was suddenly kicked open. Still half asleep, Nora was dragged upright by Liam. "Liam? What are you doing?" His whole face was terrifyingly dark, like a storm about to break. His voice was hoarse, and his eyes looked as though they wanted to tear Nora limb from limb. "I already told you to learn your place. But instead, you put abortion pills in Olivia's food! She's been vomiting all night, and now she's showing signs of a threatened miscarriage. Wasn't the last lesson enough for you?" Nora was dragged into the apartment and thrown hard onto the floor. Olivia was crying so hard her face was drenched in tears. "Nora, I truly don't understand. What did I ever do to you? You've carried a child before too. How could you be so cruel? How could you try to kill my baby?" Nora looked at the room full of black-clad bodyguards, her mind going blank. "I didn't…" But Liam did not listen to a word of explanation. With nothing more than a look from him, the bodyguards pinned her down and forced her to kneel in front of the enormous screen. Nora frowned. "Liam, what exactly are you trying to do?" The moment the words left her mouth, the screen lit up. Isla suddenly appeared on it. After just a few days, she had regained a little consciousness, but her limbs had begun to waste away, and she still could not move… Outside the room, the old doctor and Vincent were kneeling on the ground with guns pressed to their heads. And the one holding the camera was Xavier—Olivia's beast of a brother. He switched the camera to selfie mode and waved at Nora with a grin. "You hid Isla really well. Took me forever to find her." All the blood in Nora's body seemed to freeze solid in her veins. She stopped breathing for a moment, then let out a hoarse scream, "Liam, what are you trying to do? Why is that monster anywhere near Isla? What are you trying to do?!"
