There was quiet around the table, just the sound of Jack slurping cold girl grey and going Yuck. It had been a short telling to the tale, but it was potent, as was the resultant destruction of a middle class decorous idyll.
‘Why would the Duchess act that way?’ Pimple asked.
‘Because it is her way,’ Jack said, ‘it’s the way she grew up, fighting the law with as much violence as possible and accumulating wealth and power, in a local gangster way. She was, the scourge of South London, one Frankie White.’
Jimbo filled in some detail, ‘Frankie White was a notorious gangster who disappeared in the early nineties. He was presumed to have been killed by rivals and the body made to disappear. Nobody much cared, the streets were well rid.’
