Kimberly's POV:
After my little encounter with the so-called Ashford heir, I made a quick escape before he could continue whatever game he was playing.
I had no interest in becoming entertainment for some rich troublemaker.
By lunchtime, the entire school seemed to know about me. I had barely taken two bites of my food when the same group of girls from my class surrounded my table. The blonde who was apparently their leader tapped her manicured nails on the surface of the table.
“Enjoying your meal, charity case?” Lexi asked and her minion friends giggled.
I kept my eyes on my tray and forced myself to chew slowly. Ignore them, that was the plan. Don't fall for their useless tactics, it won't be worth it.
She leaned down closer. “Didn’t you hear me? Or maybe, you're just daft.” she smirked. Oh my goodness, why do I keep coming across bitches like this one? First it was Brianna and now it's her?
I sighed and finally looked up. “Yes. I heard you.”
“And?” she dragged, raising her perfectly carved eyebrow.
“And I don’t care.” I said dryly and then picked up my spoon to continue eating.
Her smile vanished instantly and the girls exchanged looks before one of them suddenly shoved my shoulder. “You think you’re funny? No one dare to speak to us like that, girl.”
I clenched my fists under the table. No fighting. No fighting. No fighting. “Look,” I said calmly, “I don't know about you, but I’m just trying to eat peacefully. I was raised to have table manners. If you knew what table manners were then I doubt you'd be here.”
The looked offended. “Well, you’re eating in the wrong place,” Lexi shot. “This table belongs to us.”
I glanced around the crowded cafeteria and saw that every table was taken, then I sighed before speaking slowly. “Seems like it belongs to whoever sits here, ma'am. If you really needed a table, then you would have been here earlier than this before all the tables got occupied. But I guess, you don't even feel hungry."
"She's got some audacity, we need to put her in her place, Lexi!" Sloane, who was one of her
Lexi's eyes darkened. “You really don’t understand how things work here, do you?”
Before I could respond, one of her friends suddenly knocked my tray off the table and my food crashed to the floor. Broken glasses with food spilled everywhere, making the cafeteria to fall silent in surprise. I felt all their gazes on me. It was exactly what they wanted.
Heat rushed up my neck. They were doing it on purpose, trying to make me react and get me expelled again, but my parents’ faces flashed in my mind.
"This is your last chance, Kim." I remembered my mom saying that to me.
My temper screamed at me to stand up but I stayed seated because I knew I couldn't afford to mess up again. They really pulled through to get me enrolled here... I can't afford to ruin that for them.
Lexi leaned closer with a mocking smile and then suddenly grabbed my chin, her nails pinching into my skin. “Why are you so quiet now, stupid girl? Did the cat get your tongue. Huh?” I was almost about considering to retaliate, my hand mid-air when the cafeteria doors opened.
A few students glanced toward the entrance, then whispers started spreading like wildfire.
“is that...Julian?”
“Move, move…It's him. Julian is here.” more than half of the cafeteria girls squealed.
I frowned slightly. Who?
A path quickly formed through the students and then I saw him. It was a tall boy who wheeled himself in.
What caught my attention wasn’t the surprising wheelchair, it was his face that looked so calm… almost detached from everything around him.
He was ridiculously handsome, like a Greek god. The kind of handsome that made people stare without realizing it and for a brief moment my heart skipped.
Wait a minute, I knew him. That was the boy from the accident days ago. The one who paid for the damage to that expensive BMW. The mysterious one.
Before I could process that thought, Lexi grabbed my arm. “Stand up,” she ordered, but I jerked my arm free.
“Touch me again and you’ll regret it.” I said through my clenched teeth and she laughed like she just heard the most expensive joke of the century.
“Or what? You’ll cry to a teacher or run home to your poverty stricken parents?” Her friends burst into laughter like some hyenas. Typically speaking, they sounded and looked like one. You know, the one from The Lion King? Yeah, that one.
Then she said the one thing that snapped the last thread of my patience. “Girls like you should remember their place. You should know that school like this one isn't meant for middle class stray cats like you. I recommend getting enrolled in something within your level. You hear me? You need status to survive here. And status comes with money, fame, literally all the privileges you don't have, b***h!"
Something in my head clicked, I was losing my cool. If I fought back, I’d get expelled, but if I did nothing, these girls would make my life miserable and won't let me go.
My eyes flicked toward the boy in the wheelchair again. An idea that was completely insane popped into my head.
Well, desperate times.
Before my brain could stop me, I stood up, walked straight toward him, and grabbed the collar of his shirt.
The cafeteria gasped the moment I held him. I ignored all of it, and then I kissed him right there In front of everyone.
It was meant to be quick, just a fake kiss that would last for a second or two then I'm done. Well, except that he kissed me back. Hard.
His hand suddenly gripped my waist as the kiss deepened, his tongue prying my lips open further like a cave man in search of a treasure. It was sweet and dominant.
What the f**k? My brain exploded. Wait. Wait wait wait. This was not part of the plan.
I tried to be defiant, not to melt into him but his lips were so warm and firm. Incredibly dangerous that my lungs screamed for oxygen before he finally pulled away.
I was left breathless. Completely stunned as I stared at him wide-eyed, breathing so fast as I tried to catch and balance my breathe. He literally sucked the life out of me.
Hundreds of stunned faces stared at us.
Perfect, now it's time for the grand finale. I turned to the girls and lifted my chin.
“It’s best if you back away now,” I declared confidently. “Or else my boyfriend will come after you.”
“My what?” Lexi snapped. I bet she was in shock.
I smiled sweetly and walked back to the guy who I suppose his name was Julian, casually sitting on his lap like it was the most normal thing in the world.
“I said,” I repeated proudly, “my boyfriend.” I watched how everyone’s eyes shifted to him, waiting for some sort of drama, expecting him to explode because apparently this guy had a some reputation I was yet to know about, yet it was clear as daybreak that tons of girls in this academy had a crush on him.
Julian looked down at me, his eyes studying my face quietly. For a moment, I thought I had completely ruined his day, I was scared for my life. What if all this efforts goes to waste and then ends up embarrassing me in front of everyone? I argued in my head before his calm, cold voice cut out my thoughts.
“Do you want my girlfriend to repeat herself?” The students gasped while the girls’ faces turned pale.
Julian’s gaze shifted toward them, his expression suddenly icy. “Leave.” he commanded in a not so loud tone but it carried authority.
"Julian, she—?" Lexi took a step forward about to say something but Julian stopped her.
"You heard me. Leave." He ordered, colder this time and Lexi balled her fingers, her nails digging into her palm.
She glared at me as if I had stolen her man. "Don't you dare think you've won, Kimberly. You'd get it from me sooner or later," She said before storming off. None of the other girls following Lexi could argue, and within seconds, they scattered just like that.
The problem was solved, the cafeteria slowly returned to life with buzzing whispers and conversations.
I quickly stood up from his lap. “Uh...Thanks. once again,” I whispered awkwardly but Julian didn’t reply. He simply watched me with an unreadable expression.
Later that afternoon, I found him near the courtyard. I hesitated before walking over.
“Hey.” I greeted and he looked up from the book in his lap. Those grey eyes landed on me again.
“I came to apologize,” I said quickly.
“For the kiss thing earlier.” he asked and then closed the book calmly. “Why?”
“Because I used you to escape those bad bitches. I know it's wrong and I shouldn't have done that but it was the only thing I could come up with in that moment. I am really sorry."
He shrugged lightly. “I didn’t mind.” That surprised me. I expected him to say something totally different from this.
“You didn’t?”
“No.”
I scratched the back of my neck awkwardly. “Well… thanks for backing me up. I appreciate.”
“You owe me,” he said simply, making me blink. Did I hear him right?
“I do?” I asked, genuinely confused.
“Yes.” His gaze sharpened slightly. “One favor in the future.” there was something about the way he said it that made my stomach tighten, but considering he just saved me from the humiliation…
“Fine,” I sighed. “I owe you.”
A faint smile appeared on his lips. Deal sealed.
After chatting for a few more minutes, I said goodbye and headed back toward the classroom building.
Suddenly, a strong hand grabbed my wrist and pulled me out of nowhere.
“What the—” Before I could react, someone pulled me into a small room and the door slammed shut behind us. The room was completely dark and it smelled of cleaning supplies. A janitor’s closet.
