Zala's POV
My heart was beating so fast, I thought it might jump right out of my chest. The safe room felt too small, too dark. I could hear the sounds of fighting outside, and it made my stomach do flip-flops.
"It's gonna be okay, right?" Lily, one of the younger pups, asked me. Her big brown eyes were full of tears.
I tried to smile, but it felt all wrong on my face. "Yeah, of course. Our parents are out there. They'll protect us."
"But what if they don't?" Another voice piped up. "What if those glowy-eyed monsters get in here?"
"They won't," I said, trying to sound braver than I felt. "King made sure of that."
Thinking about my brother made my chest hurt. He was out there, fighting. I hoped he was okay.
"I'm scared," Lily whimpered, scooting closer to me.
