Chapter 13: The White Silence

566 Words
The landscape had changed. The grey concrete of the capital was replaced by the jagged, snow-covered peaks of the Northern Border. Here, the air was so cold it felt like breathing glass, and the "Iron Protocol" felt more like a ghost story—until you saw the silver surveillance drones circling the mountain passes like vultures. Mirana huddled in the back of the resistance transport, her hands wrapped around a thermos of bitter coffee. She looked at William, who was staring out the frosted window. He was dressed in heavy, white tactical gear, his face still pale but his gaze as sharp as a bayonet. "We’re crossing into the 'Dead Zone' in twenty minutes," William said, his voice low. He didn't turn around, but she could see his reflection in the glass. "The Council’s secondary fortress, The Aegis, is just beyond that ridge. It’s where they keep the master kill-switch for the national grid." "And if we fail to stop it?" Mirana asked. "Then every digital footprint of the 'Silver Lens' disappears. The world goes dark, and they rewrite history to make us the villains forever." Mirana reached into her bag and pulled out her camera. She had spent the last few hours cleaning the sensor and taping the cracked lens with black electrical tape. It looked like a survivor, just like her. "I won't let that happen," she said firmly. William finally turned, his eyes softening as they landed on her. He walked over and sat on the bench beside her, the heat from his body a welcome contrast to the freezing interior of the van. "You’ve changed, Mirana. Back in the archives, you were afraid of your own shadow. Now... you're walking into a fortress that even my elite squad would fear." "I learned from the best," she teased gently, though her eyes remained serious. "Besides, someone has to be there to document the moment the Protocol falls." Suddenly, the van screeched to a halt. The Fixer’s voice barked over the comms: "Heads up! We’ve got an EMP surge. The scanners are going haywire. Everyone out! We move on foot from here!" The side door slid open, and a blast of arctic wind hit them. Mirana stepped out into a world of pure white. The storm was so thick she could barely see the person in front of her. "Stay close to me," William commanded, grabbing her hand. His grip was firm, a silent promise in the middle of the blizzard. As they struggled through the waist-deep snow, a rhythmic thumping sound began to vibrate through the ground. It wasn't thunder. It was the sound of heavy robotic walkers—the Iron Sentinels—patrolling the perimeter of The Aegis. "Get down!" William hissed, pulling Mirana behind a massive frozen boulder. A red spotlight swept over the snow just inches from their boots. Mirana held her breath, her heart drumming against her ribs. She looked at William, who was already checking his weapon, his face set in a mask of lethal concentration. This was it. No more hiding in alleys. No more shadows. They were at the gates of the enemy’s final stand. "Ready?" William whispered, his eyes meeting hers. Mirana adjusted the strap of her camera, then reached for the pistol at her hip. "Ready."
