Chapter 15: The Aegis Sunrise

1080 Words
The Northern frontier was a jagged wasteland of white and iron. Here, at the edge of the civilized world, the cold wasn’t just weather—it was a weapon. The wind howled through the canyons of the Northern peaks like a dying beast, carrying with it the scent of ozone and impending doom. High above, the massive spotlights of The Aegis fortress sliced through the pre-dawn gloom, searching for any sign of life in the frozen void. Mirana huddled in the shadow of a jagged rock, her breath blooming in thick, ragged clouds. Her fingers, despite the thermal gloves, felt like ice. She looked at her camera bag, then at the tactical rifle slung over her shoulder. The weight of both felt heavy—one represented her past as a silent witness, the other her present as a desperate rebel. "The Fixer is on a secure loop," Mirana whispered into her comms, her voice trembling slightly from the cold. "He says the Council has initiated the secondary cooling sequence. Protocol Zero is officially in its final countdown. Thirty minutes, William. If we don’t bridge the central core by then, the Silver Lens files won’t just be deleted—the servers will self-destruct. Every digital record of our existence will be vaporized." William knelt beside her, a shadow among shadows. He was applying black tactical grease to his cheekbones, his movements calm and rhythmic, as if he were preparing for a routine drill rather than a suicide mission. He looked at the fortress—a monolith of dark obsidian and reinforced steel—with a gaze that could cut through the blizzard. "Then we don't have time for fear," William said, his voice a low, vibrating baritone that grounded her. He turned to look at her, and for a second, the hardened Commander vanished, replaced by the man who had kissed her in the cave. "The Aegis uses a dual-gate security system. I’ve studied these blueprints for years. The Eastern gate is guarded by two Iron Sentinels—robotic walkers with thermal-tracking Gatling guns. They can’t be hacked; they have to be destroyed." "And the Western vent?" Mirana asked, her heart hammering against her ribs. "It’s narrow. It leads directly to the server hub. But it’s shielded by an electromagnetic field that will fry any electronics—including your camera and my comms. Once you go in, you’re on your own, Mirana. No Fixer, no me. You’ll have to use the physical override." "You’re going to be the distraction," she realized, the horror dawning on her. "You’re going to let those Sentinels target you so I can slip in." William reached out, his gloved hand cupping her face. The warmth of his touch was the only thing keeping her from shattering. "I am a soldier, Mirana. My job is to hold the line so the truth can pass through. You are the only one who knows the encryption keys. You are the only one who can tell the world what we saw." "I can't lose you," she whispered, a single tear freezing on her lash. "You won't. I've survived the Protocol's brainwashing; I can survive a few tin cans with guns." He leaned in, pressing his forehead against hers. "When the first explosion hits the East gate, you run. Don't stop for anything. Not even if you hear my voice on the radio." The first explosion was a pillar of orange fire that turned the snow into gold. William was gone before the echoes died out, a ghost charging into the mouth of hell. Mirana moved. She sprinted across the open tundra, her boots sinking into the drifts. Behind her, the rhythmic thud-thud-thud of the Sentinels' guns tore through the air. She heard William’s voice over the loudspeaker, shouting tactical bait, drawing the fire away from her path. She reached the Western vent, her lungs burning like they were filled with acid. She sliced through the grate and dropped into a world of humming blue light and suffocating heat. The transition from the arctic cold to the server room’s radiation was dizzying. She reached the central console, her fingers flying. "I'm in... I'm in..." she gasped. But as she touched the master key, the screens turned blood-red. ACCESS DENIED: BIOMETRIC VOICE OVERRIDE REQUIRED. "Looking for a way out, little bird?" The voice was like a jagged blade. Mirana spun around, her pistol raised. General Kael stood at the far end of the walkway, her silhouette framed by the glowing servers. Her face was a nightmare of bandages and scorched skin, but her eyes held a terrifying, cold sanity. "You think you can just upload a few files and save the world?" Kael stepped forward, a heavy-duty pulse rifle in her hands. "The Protocol isn't just data, Mirana. It's an idea. And ideas don't die because of a photographer." "My father's idea was better," Mirana spat, her finger tightening on the trigger. "Your father was a dreamer. And dreamers die. Just like your Captain." Kael threw a battered tactical earpiece onto the floor. It was William’s. It was covered in blood. "He fought well. But even a Commander can't stop a Sentinel's blade." The world tilted. Mirana’s breath caught in her throat. The sight of the blood-stained earpiece sent a wave of agony through her soul. But in that darkness, a memory flickered—the sound of the shutter. The truth. "You're lying," Mirana whispered, her emerald eyes hardening into something lethal. "He’s still fighting. And so am I." Mirana didn't fire at Kael. She fired at the overhead coolant pipe. As the room filled with blinding white steam, Mirana lunged for the console. She didn't need her own voice. She pulled out her father's old recorder—the one she had saved from the archives. She pressed it to the mic and played the one phrase he used to say to her every night. "The light always finds a way, Mirana." ACCESS GRANTED. UPLOADING... The sound of a heavy boots echoed through the steam. A figure emerged, battered, bleeding, but standing tall. William. "I told you," William rasped, his eyes locking onto Mirana’s. "I'm a hard man to kill." Kael roared in fury, but it was too late. The progress bar hit 100%. Across the globe, the screens began to glow.
