Chapter Two: The Masked Stranger The mirror’s whispers echoed in Seraphina’s mind long after she left the ruins. Her footsteps were light, but the weight of what she’d seen clung to her like a second skin. The reflection hadn’t shown her , it had shown a shadowy throne and a realm cloaked in silver flame. A name had been spoken in a tongue older than time , Vaeloria. She didn’t know what it meant, but she felt it ,in her bones, in her blood ,like it had always been there .Night settled quickly in the forest. Mist curled around the trees like ghostly serpents, and the moon, full and bright, bathed the path in silver. Seraphina clutched the mirror under her cloak and moved silently, every crunch of a twig sounding like thunder to her ears. Then, suddenly a rustle , She froze, a figure emerged from the mist, tall and cloaked, with a hood that shadowed the face and a silver mask carved like a wolf’s snarl. Seraphina’s breath caught. The figure said nothing, only watched. The air shifted ,magic thickened, pressing against her chest.“You followed me,” she whispered, though her voice trembled more from awe than fear. “I followed the mirror,” the masked stranger replied, voice smooth like smoke, laced with power. “And the girl foolish enough to touch it.”Seraphina’s spine stiffened. “I’m not foolish.”The stranger stepped closer, the edge of his cloak brushing leaves. “No… You’re chosen. The mirror doesn’t awaken unless the blood of the ancient line stirs it.”Her heart thudded. “What do you know about my blood?”He tilted his head. “Only that it’s not what you were raised to believe. And now the mirror has marked you. You’ve begun something that cannot be undone.”Seraphina gripped the mirror tighter. “Then help me understand.”The masked figure hesitated, then reached into his cloak and pulled out a silver shard ,a piece of a crown. It pulsed in time with the mirror in her hand.“There are three relics tied to the Throne of Vaeloria,” he said. “The mirror, the shard… and the flame ring. Only the rightful heir can unite them. But they’re not unguarded.”“Let me guess,” she said. “There’s a trial?”“Five,” he replied grimly. “Each forged in magic older than kingdoms. Each meant to break you before you can rise.”Her hands trembled. “And if I survive?”“Then you claim your destiny. You become the flame in the dark.” Seraphina looked at the shard, then at the mirror. Her fear warred with something deeper , a fire awakening. Her mother had always said she was born under a comet, destined for something. Maybe this was it.“I accept,” she said. The masked stranger bowed his head. “Then the first trial begins now.” The ground trembled. Roots burst from the earth, wrapping around her legs. The forest grew silent , too silent. Then, the voices began , whispers of doubt, of failure, of fear. The Trial of Truth.Seraphina fell to her knees, eyes clenched shut as the voices screamed. But she held the mirror tight, letting its glow steady her heart. “I am not what they say,” she murmured. “I am more, I am ready to fight for what is rightfully mine and set my kingdom free .And the forest listened, the roots loosened, the air warmed , the masked figure nodded. “One down. Four to go.”Seraphina stood tall, her eyes blazing with quiet fire. “Then let them come.”
