Chapter 8: The King’s Weakness.
The forest opened suddenly into a clearing, where golden rays filtered down through a canopy of celestial trees, casting shimmering light upon a structure that looked as though it had been carved from stardust itself ,the Golden Gate. It stood tall and radiant, nestled between two stone pillars, its intricate frame glowing with ancient runes. This was the final path to the antidote ,the only power capable of weakening King Malrec’s stolen magic and reclaiming the throne for its true heir.Seraphina’s breath caught in her throat. “We’re here,” she whispered , Kaelen stood beside her, his hand brushing hers. “Let’s hope we’re ready.”
As they approached, the gate pulsed softly. A voice, not loud, but rich with age and wisdom, echoed through the clearing. “To pass through the Gate of Gold, Answer the riddle true and bold. Not by sword nor by flame, But by heart shall you stake your claim.”
A swirl of golden dust formed a glowing inscription in the air ,“ I grow only when given away, Yet I am never lost, I bind the weak, empower the strong, And carry no cost. What am I? the voice said .Seraphina and Kaelen froze. The air around them shimmered, waiting. Seraphina furrowed her brow. “It’s a riddle... but it feels like more.”Kaelen’s eyes narrowed. “Let’s think. It grows when it’s given... never lost. Binds people, strengthens them.”“Not a weapon,” Seraphina said softly. “Not knowledge... it has to be...”
Kaelen looked at her. “Love, Seraphina turned toward him, the word lingering in the air. “Love,” she echoed, breathlessly. The moment the word passed her lips, the golden runes burst into brilliant light. The gate creaked open with a sound like singing wind. The voice returned:
“You have spoken truth, Only love can unravel the chains of stolen power.”
They stepped through the gate and into a sanctuary glowing with soft golden light. At its center stood a pedestal, upon which rested a crystalline vial filled with liquid light , the antidote to weaken king Malrec.
But as Seraphina approached, a second riddle shimmered into the air:“Before you take, answer true: Is love possession or release? A flame to own, or a fire to share?”
Kaelen frowned. “Another one.”
Seraphina read it aloud, slower this time. “Is love possession... or release?”Kaelen met her gaze. “Possession... is what Malrec has done. He clung to power that wasn’t his. But real love... it lets go. It gives.”Seraphina nodded. Her voice was steady as she said, “Love is release.”
As the words left her mouth, the vial lifted itself gently into the air and floated into Seraphina’s open hands. Its glow pulsed with warmth the antidote was theirs.
Kaelen smiled. “You did it.”“No,” she replied, eyes softening. “We did it.”Before they could leave, the voice spoke one final time:
“You have answered in love. But love tested is love proven. The king’s strength is built on lies. Your strength must be truth.”Seraphina turned to Kaelen. The journey had changed them both. What began as duty had bloomed into something tender something deeper , “I’m not sure what lies ahead,” she whispered.
Kaelen stepped closer, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “Then let’s face it together.”She smiled and clutched the vial. The antidote was the key to bringing Malrec to his knees, but love , pure and unselfish , was the real weapon.
As they stepped back through the gate, hand in hand, the forest didn’t feel so dark anymore.
