The Wrong Goodbye
Introduction
There is an old belief that every person is born with a red thread tied around their heart.
No matter how far life takes them, no matter how many years pass, that invisible thread quietly leads them back to the people they are destined to meet. It stretches across cities, mountains, oceans, and even time itself. It may tangle. It may fray. It may disappear from sight.
But it never truly breaks.
Some people call it fate.
Others call it coincidence.
Some believe every meeting happens for a reason, while others insist that life is nothing more than a series of random moments. They say every hello is already written long before two strangers ever cross paths, and every goodbye has its own purpose, even if no one understands it at the time.
Emanuel never believed in either.
If someone had asked him what destiny looked like, he would have laughed and said it was just another word people invented to make sense of things they couldn't control.
To him, life was unpredictable. It could change in an instant without warning, taking away the people you loved or leading you somewhere you never expected to be. Nothing was guaranteed—not tomorrow, not forever, and certainly not happy endings.
Life wasn't a story.
It didn't always have a happy ending.
And people didn't always get second chances.
Sometimes, the most unforgettable stories begin with an ordinary day. Sometimes, the greatest love arrives when it is least expected. And sometimes, the goodbye everyone prepares for is never the one that fate chooses.
