Chapter 3: A Blast from the Past Nathan stood by the window of his small home office, staring out blankly at the flurry of snow falling outside. His encounter with Elena had dredged up the memories he had buried long ago. As the world outside was getting all white, his mind wandered back to vibrant days of their past-how they met, fell in love, and what finally drove them apart. A Chance Meeting It was that summer when Nathan had finally hit their junior year in college. Alone, she sat under the sprawling oak on campus, her nose inside a novel, while auburn hairs danced in reflected sunlights. Nathan was that soccer player in college with carefree abandon and a knack for mischief; on this particular morning, egged on by friends to start the conversation. Hey, is that book as good as it looks, or are you just pretending to avoid people?" he had teased, his trademark grin in place. Elena had looked up, startled, but there was no mistaking the spark in her eyes. "It's Pride and Prejudice. I'm sure it's far beyond your reading list," she quipped, returning her gaze to the page. Intrigued by her sharp wit, Nathan plopped down beside her, feigning interest in her book. Little did that trivial moment turn out to be the beginning of something that neither of them could ever have anticipated. Casual banter bloomed into study sessions, late-night phone calls, and impromptu adventures. A Love That Felt Unstoppable Over the next few years, they became closer. Nathan loved Elena's love of books and her dream of opening up a bookstore one day. She loved his love of life and the iron determination he had in pursuing his dreams of being a professional soccer player. They were opposites in many ways-she enjoyed quiet evenings with books, while he on the other hand enjoyed the noise of jammed-full stadiums. Yet those differences strengthened their bond and didn't weaken it. One summer evening, during a town fair much like the one Elena had visited earlier, Nathan took her hand and pulled her toward the Ferris wheel. As they ascended, the world below seemed to dissolve, leaving only the two of them. “I’ve been thinking,” Nathan said, his voice unusually serious. “You and me—we could do this forever, couldn’t we?” Elena laughed nervously. “Do what? Ride Ferris wheels?” "No," he said, squeezing her hand. "This. Us. I love you, Elena." Her breath caught, her heart racing as it always did when he looked at her like that. "I love you too." They felt invincible then, as though nothing would ever come between them. But life had other plans. The Cracks Start to Show As graduation loomed, the real world began to break into their utopian bubble. Nathan was offered to play with a soccer team out of state, something he had always wanted. Elena got an internship at a prestigious publishing house in New York, her first step to what she wanted. From frequent phone calls to less frequent weekend meetings, they promised to see each other whenever they could. Yet, their respective careers slowly eroded the closeness that was once shared. Oftentimes, Nathan's matches conflicted with Elena's deadlines, leaving little room for connection. The moments of silence between their conversations became heavier, laced with frustration and unmet expectations. And so, one evening, after all the missed calls and curt messages, Elena had said what they were both afraid to say. "This isn't working, Nathan. We are not the same people we used to be in college." The tendons of his jaw clenched, and at his sides, his hands tightened into fists. "So, what? We just give up? "I'm not giving up," Elena said, voice trembling. "But we're pulling in different directions. I want you to succeed. I want me to succeed. Maybe.maybe we can't do that together." Like a knife to the heart. "So, over everything, you're walking away?" Tears brimmed her eyes, but she didn't back down. "I'm not walking away. I'm letting you go." The Breaking Point Their breakup wasn't dramatic or loud; it was quiet, almost resigned, as if both of them knew in the very core of their souls that fighting it would only prolong what was inevitable. They parted with an awkward hug, the weight of their unspoken love pressing down on them. Nathan had watched her walk away, her figure growing smaller with each step until she disappeared from view. For weeks afterward, Nathan flung himself into his career, using the pain for fuel to train harder, play better, focus wholly on his goals. But no matter how many victories he achieved on the field, a part of him would always feel hollow. Meanwhile, Elena dove into her work, finding solace in the busy streets of New York. But every now and then, she'd see a soccer game on TV or hear a song that reminded her of Nathan, and the ache in her chest would return. Back to the Present Now, he stood by the window and wondered if things could have been different. Could they have fought harder for a life together? Might he have found a balance in his dreams with hers? The questions were innumerable; the answers were not. Seeing Elena again after all this time had reignited feelings he thought he'd buried, but with those feelings came the uncertainty of whether this was his chance to fix what had been broken, or would the reopening of old wounds be just another pain? The snow fell gently outside, and Nathan took a silent vow. He didn't know what was going to happen next, but there was one thing that he knew with certainty-he couldn't fight what he felt anymore.
