The afternoon sun was beginning to set over Manila, painting the city in golden light that could have been beautiful if Jenny’s heart weren’t racing with fear. What Rafiq had said echoed in her mind again and again:
> “My brother… he’s awake.”
She followed Rafiq into her small apartment, where the old lamp rested on the table. The faint golden glow it once carried was now darker—tinged with red, like it was bleeding light.
Jenny shivered. “It’s changing color…”
Rafiq’s eyes hardened, his voice low. “That’s his mark. Malik.”
Jenny frowned. “Malik?”
Rafiq nodded slowly. “My younger brother. Once, he was kind… until greed consumed him. He wanted power beyond the wishes of mortals. He wanted to rule both realms—human and spirit alike.”
Jenny stepped back from the lamp. “And now he’s… here?”
“Not yet,” Rafiq replied, his expression grave. “He’s trying to break through. But he needs a host—someone who touches the lamp with desire in their heart.”
Jenny froze. “You mean… someone like me?”
Rafiq’s eyes softened. “No. Your intentions are pure. That’s why the lamp chose you. But someone near you…”
At that moment, her phone buzzed. It was Mira.
> “Jenny, are you home? Something weird just happened at the café… the lights went crazy, and the air felt—cold.”
Jenny’s blood ran cold. “Rafiq… what if it’s already started?”
He didn’t answer. Instead, he raised his hand, and a faint shimmer of golden mist enveloped them both. “Stay behind me.”
In the blink of an eye, the world shifted. Jenny gasped—they were standing inside the café, though it was empty. Chairs were overturned, and the lights flickered eerily.
“Mira?” Jenny called out, her voice trembling. “Where are you?”
A low chuckle answered her, coming from the backroom.
“Jenny… is that you?”
Jenny turned sharply—and there stood Mira. But something was wrong. Her eyes glowed faintly red, and her voice sounded hollow, distant.
“Mira!” Jenny cried, rushing forward, but Rafiq pulled her back.
“That’s not her,” he warned. “He’s taken her form.”
Malik’s voice echoed from Mira’s lips, smooth and mocking. “Always the cautious one, brother. You hide among mortals, and now you’ve grown… attached?”
Jenny froze as the air grew colder, heavy with something dark.
Rafiq’s eyes blazed gold. “Release her, Malik. She’s innocent.”
“Innocent?” Malik sneered through Mira’s lips. “No one is innocent, brother. You, of all beings, should know what it’s like to crave freedom—and to be denied it.”
Jenny trembled as Malik raised Mira’s hand, dark energy swirling in her palm. “This world will be mine. And you, Rafiq, will kneel before me again.”
Rafiq stepped forward, his aura flaring. “Not while I breathe.”
He flicked his wrist, and golden light clashed with Malik’s dark aura. The café trembled. Tables shattered, glass exploded. Jenny ducked behind the counter, watching in terror as the two opposing forces battled like storms of night and day.
“Rafiq!” she shouted. “You’ll destroy everything!”
He glanced back at her, his voice strained. “I can’t hold him here. Jenny—you have to break the link. Touch Mira’s hand. Say her name!”
Jenny’s heart pounded. She crawled out from hiding and ran toward Mira’s possessed body, dodging bursts of energy that scorched the walls.
“Mira!” she screamed, grabbing her friend’s arm. “It’s me! It’s Jenny! Please—come back!”
For a moment, Mira’s red eyes flickered. Her voice cracked. “Jen…ny?”
Jenny tightened her grip. “You’re stronger than him! Fight it!”
Malik roared, trying to push her away, but Jenny’s tears fell onto Mira’s hand—and as they touched the glowing lamp on the floor, light exploded around them.
A powerful surge threw Jenny back, and when the light faded, Mira collapsed—unconscious but breathing.
Rafiq knelt beside her, his form flickering from exhaustion. “You did it… you broke his hold.”
Jenny gasped for air, her heart racing. “Is he gone?”
Rafiq’s expression darkened. “No. He’s weakened—but not gone. He’ll find another way.”
Jenny hugged Mira tightly, relief and fear mixing in her chest. “She almost died because of me…”
Rafiq looked at her, his eyes filled with a mixture of admiration and guilt. “Because of us.”
Jenny looked up, her voice trembling. “You said he was your brother. Why is he doing this?”
Rafiq sighed deeply, looking away. “We were both bound to serve humanity. But Malik grew bitter. When I was chosen as the guardian of the lamp—the one bound to grant wishes—he saw it as betrayal. He wanted that power. He wanted worship.”
Jenny frowned. “So this is all about… revenge?”
“More than that,” Rafiq said quietly. “He wants to shatter the barrier between worlds. If he succeeds, mortals and spirits will collide—and chaos will reign.”
Jenny swallowed hard, her hands trembling. “And I’m stuck in the middle of it.”
Rafiq turned to her, his tone suddenly fierce. “You’re not just in the middle, Jenny. You’re the key. You were chosen by the lamp for a reason. There’s something inside you—something that even I don’t fully understand.”
Jenny stared at him, confusion and fear swirling in her eyes. “Chosen? Me? I’m just… a girl with bad luck and too many jobs.”
Rafiq smiled faintly. “Maybe once. But not anymore.”
Before she could reply, the lamp on the floor pulsed faintly—one last flash of red, like a heartbeat.
Rafiq’s gaze snapped to it. “He’s not finished. He’s watching us.”
Jenny stepped closer to him, her voice trembling. “Then what do we do now?”
Rafiq met her eyes, his tone solemn but gentle. “We fight together. But from this moment on, Jenny Reyes… nothing in your world will ever be the same.”
The golden light around them dimmed, leaving only the quiet hum of the city outside. Jenny glanced at her unconscious friend, then at the genie beside her—half human, half light—realizing that the battle had only just begun.
And for the first time, she wasn’t sure if the enemy was the darkness outside… or the growing storm inside her heart.
