The Billionaire's Intern Chapter 2: The Rules of Engagement The silence in the office was heavy, pressurized by the storm outside and the dangerous weight of Julian Thorne’s words. Ava’s heart battered against her ribs, but she didn't retreat. She forced herself to remain grounded beneath his heavy, dark gaze, taking a subtle, deliberate breath to steady the pulse fluttering wildly in her throat. "Past midnight, Mr. Thorne?" Ava murmured, her voice laced with a quiet defiance that surprised even herself. "I didn't realize overtime came with an ownership clause." Julian’s firm lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile. The gesture didn't warm his features; it only highlighted the sharp, predatory angles of his jawline and cheekbones. He took another half-step closer, his broad chest nearly touching hers, effectively trapping her between his looming frame and the sharp edge of the granite desk. "Everything in this building operates on my terms, Miss Vance," Julian rasped, his voice dropping an octave into a low, rumbling frequency that vibrated straight through her chest. "The analysts, the board, the assets. And especially an intern who thinks she can walk into my office after hours and rewrite my financial strategies." "I didn't rewrite them," Ava countered, tilting her head back to meet his dark, hooded eyes. "I optimized them. There’s a difference." "Optimization requires permission." "And waiting for permission would have cost this firm twelve million dollars in European tariffs by nine o'clock tomorrow morning," she fired back, her chin lifting. "You hire people to protect your empire, Mr. Thorne. I'm doing my job." Julian stared down at her, his expression unreadable, but the smoldering intensity in his eyes flared brighter. His gaze drifted slowly down the line of her throat, lingering on the rapid beat of her pulse, before tracking down the smooth drape of her silk blouse and settling back on her eyes. "You have a habit of speaking to me as if we are equals, Ava," he murmured softly. "Are we not?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, though the air between them was so charged it felt electric. "Or does my title mean I'm supposed to pretend you don't notice every single move I make?" Julian didn't answer immediately. Instead, he reached out. His broad, calloused fingers hovered over the edge of the granite desk before lightly, deliberately brushing against the side of her waist. Even through the tailored fabric of her blazer, the contact sent a jolt of raw heat shooting through her lower abdomen. Ava caught her breath, her eyelids fluttering slightly at the sensation. "You think you know what I notice?" Julian rasped, his hand sliding slowly up the curve of her ribcage, his broad palm pressing gently against her side. His fingers were searingly warm, imposing an undeniable physical presence that shattered the last lingering illusion of professional distance. "I notice that you’ve worked eighteen-hour days for six weeks straight. I notice that you stand closer than you need to when you deliver reports. And I notice how your pulse spikes every time I say your name." Ava’s lips parted, a quiet gasp escaping her throat. She wanted to deny it, to throw up a defensive shield of corporate protocol, but the sheer proximity of him was intoxicating. The subtle scent of cedarwood, rich leather, and his expensive cologne drowned out everything else in the room. "You're testing me," Ava whispered, her hands instinctively coming up to rest lightly against the broad, rigid wall of his chest, her fingers feeling the heavy beat of his heart beneath his three-piece suit. "I am assessing an investment," Julian corrected, his voice thick and gravelly. He leaned down, his face inches from hers, his dark eyes searching hers with ruthless precision. "And deciding whether to claim it." His thumb hooked beneath her chin, tilting her head up. The contact was gentle, yet filled with an implicit, unyielding dominance that made Ava’s knees go weak. "If I cross this line, Ava," Julian murmured against her lips, his warm breath fanning across her face, "there is no going back. You won't just be an intern working late. You will be mine. In this office, in my home, and in every room we share." Ava looked into his eyes, seeing the absolute authority, the unspoken promise, and the consuming hunger reflected back at her. The fear of ruining her career flickered for a fraction of a second, only to be instantly incinerated by the overwhelming, white-hot desire pooling in her core. "Then cross it," Ava whispered. Chapter 3 will pick up directly from this moment of surrender in Julian's office, as the physical boundary shatters completely and their late-night encounter unfolds.
