Prologue

From the moment she could remember, Isella had known she was different. Not because anyone had told her so. The streets had little patience for mysteries, and even less for strange children. They cared only whether you could outrun hunger, thieves, or winter. Yet something about her had never fit the mold of humanity. She never fell ill when sickness swept through the alleyways. Wounds that should have scarred vanished within days. Shadows lingered around her a heartbeat longer than they should, and strangers often found themselves staring without understanding why. She noticed these things, tucked them away, and carried on. Different did not mean alone. Her parents had died before she was old enough to remember their faces. The streets became her family, their cruel lessons her inheritance. She learned when to hide, when to fight, and when to smile just enough to make someone lower their guard. Survival became second nature. Oddly enough, she never felt out of place. The world was vast, filled with monsters wearing crowns and beggars with kinder hearts than kings. If she was unusual, then perhaps she simply belonged to a corner of the world she had yet to find. She could never have imagined that corner lay beneath it. Now iron shackles bit into her wrists as she stood beneath the crimson glow of enchanted lanterns. Before her stretched the Grand Auction of Curiosities—a grotesque gathering where impossible relics, forbidden beasts, cursed artifacts... and living souls were sold to the highest bidder. Around her, merchants whispered in forgotten tongues. Nobles concealed monstrous faces behind jeweled masks. Demons lounged upon obsidian balconies with the lazy confidence of predators who had never known defeat. Every eye was fixed upon her. "Lot Thirteen," the auctioneer announced, his voice echoing through the cavernous hall. "An anomaly of unknown origin. Entirely human... as far as we can determine." Laughter rippled through the crowd. The bidding had barely begun when silence fell. The towering obsidian doors groaned open. Darkness itself seemed to enter before the figure who commanded it. He wore a crown forged from blackened bone, its jagged points wreathed in living shadow. His long coat flowed like liquid midnight, swallowing the crimson light with every measured step. Ancient power rolled from him in suffocating waves, forcing demons and nobles alike to bow their heads without a word. The Lord of the Underworld had arrived. Vaelthar, the Abyss Sovereign. His crimson eyes settled upon Isella. Not with amusement. Not with desire. Recognition. For the first time in countless centuries, the immortal ruler's expression faltered by the smallest fraction. And for the first time in her life... Isella felt truly out of place.
