Trevor
I was a bit exhausted after the drama earlier; Dr. Warner hasn't given me the full details yet, but I know I was dead for a few minutes. I dozed off when Dr. Warner left. He said he was going to call my wife.
I feel her before I see her. She's squeezing my hand and sobbing. My eyes flutter open "Caro" I rasped, my throat is still sore from the tube that was in my throat. She throws herself on me and buries her face in the nape of my neck. "Easy…" I tap her gently on her shoulder. Her sobbing has turned into sniffles. "Don't you ever leave me like that again…" she quivered. She releases me from her embrace and sits on the chair by the bed. "Where are the children?" I ask in confusion "They're with mom" she responded. "How are you feeling?" "Any pain?" her voice is laced with concern.
”Apart from being told that I died today, I'm good” I laughed half heartedly.
"Dr. Warner says I'll need some therapy"
"Yes, definitely." she agreed "I'm really glad to have you back Trev. I've been through hell without you." "What do you mean Caro? It's only been a few days." I'm confused. "I wasn't out for that long."
"Ten months Trevor, not a few days. Ten months." she started sobbing again "Our children are all a year older." "Our fifteenth wedding anniversary has passed ." "You are one year older." "You missed your own birthday." she's crying now. "Don't mind me, this is happy tears."
"I really believed I was going to lose you."
I'm in shock. Total utter shock. Ten f*****g months! What the actual f**k! I've been asleep for almost an entire year.
“I…I don't remember.” It dawned on me that I didn't even know how I ended up in the hospital. "It's ok, Dr. Warner wants you to take it slow, Deon is outside waiting to see you if you're up to it." she comforted.
She steps out and allows Deon in. He's emotional for a usual tough guy, it's actually hilarious. "You gave us a scare" his voice is shaky, he's allowing emotion to show. " We chat for about fifteen minutes before the nurses come in for their afternoon vitals. Caroline tells me she'll be back in the morning as she gives me a light peck on my forehead. I inhale her seductive scent, savouring every second. My c**k twitches… at least something works after being asleep for so long. "Ok baby I'll see you tomorrow." I don't want her to leave but I know the kids need her. I'm grateful to Jamie and Deon for supporting Caroline in my absence. They've both proven to be wonderful friends.
Dr. Warner also takes his leave until tomorrow. I'm left alone to battle my thoughts and try to piece together the ten months of my life that I missed.
Luckily, Caroline left my cell phone with me. She'd recorded special moments like the kids' birthdays and saved them to my phone. I watch the videos until I drift into a deep sleep, exhausted by the reality I was pulled back to.
My eyes flutter open to the blurred image of my boy on Caroline's lap. They're whispering in an effort not to wake me. Dominic freezes. Our eyes meet and he throws himself on me and begins sobbing uncontrollably. "Daddy…" he cries "Daddy don't ever leave us like that again." I stroke the back of his head, unsure how I'm supposed to comfort him. "It's ok son, I'm ok. We'll be ok." I whispered. "Promise?" he sobbed. "Promise." for the first time in a long time I meant what I said. After an hour with Dominic, Caroline took him to school and assured me she'd be back. Dr. Warner had time to fill me in on the accident and my injuries not leaving out the part where they'd started discussing pulling the plug on my life support.
"The company basically sentenced me to death." I shook my head in disbelief.
"What was it like Mr. Ainsley?" Dr. Warner asked "What was what like?" I furrowed my brows. "In your mind Mr. Ainsley…you are one of the most challenging patients I've had in my forty years of medical practice." "While your physical injuries healed, your brain activity was off the charts while you were asleep." "Whatever was happening in your mind caused you to ejaculate sometimes three times a day." "Do you know when your heart stopped for that brief time you had an erection?" Dr. Warner was fascinated. "I…I didn't feel as if I was dreaming, Dr. Warner. Everything felt real." I muttered in confusion "I made love to Caroline every day, sometimes more than once. When I died I was inside her." Dr. Warner raised his eyebrows in disbelief. "So you're telling me this whole time you've been living a fantastic life in your head…" he laughed "I looked at him and I burst out laughing.
"Let's get you started with some exercises to re-aquaint your legs with walking." Dr. Warner supported me to transfer from the bed to the wheelchair.
"You're out of the woods now Mr. Ainsley…let's get you back in shape for your family."
