THE PRICE OF A PROMISE

PROLOGUE The first thing Clara learned about desperation was that it didn't always look like panic. Sometimes, it looked like determination. Sometimes, it looked like a girl walking into a competition she had no business entering, carrying a secret that could destroy everything she had worked for. And sometimes, it looked like a promise. A promise to save the woman who had saved her first. Clara had made hers long before she stepped onto Stanford's campus. She would get the money. She would pay for the treatment. She would make sure her nanny lived. No matter what it took. At the time, Clara thought the hardest part would be winning. She was wrong. The hardest part would be discovering what someone else was willing to do to make sure she didn't. Because by the time Clara realized someone knew her secret, it was already too late. And the message waiting on her phone contained only six words: I know who you really are. Clara stared at the screen. For the first time, she wondered if saving the person she loved most would cost her everything she had left. CHAPTER ONE The Girl Who Didn't Belong Clara had never felt poorer than she did at Stanford. It wasn't because she had nothing. She had a place to sleep. She had clothes on her back. She had managed to earn her way into one of the most prestigious universities in the country. But none of that seemed to matter when she walked through the campus gates. The cars were expensive. The clothes were designer. The conversations were about family businesses, private schools, vacations, connections and opportunities Clara could only dream of. She looked around and swallowed. This place isn't for people like me. At first, she hated Stanford. She hated the town. She hated the way everyone seemed to know someone important. Most of all, she hated how invisible she felt. Then she heard about the competition. The Best Fresher competition. One winner. One million dollars. Clara stared at the announcement on her phone for several minutes. One million dollars. Her mind immediately went somewhere else. A hospital room. A tired face. A woman who had spent her entire life putting Clara before herself. Her nanny. The woman who had raised her after her parents died. The woman who had wiped her tears when nobody else was there. The woman who had stayed. Now she was sick. Cancer. And the treatment wasn't cheap. Clara stared at the competition announcement again. For the first time since arriving at Stanford, she didn't feel like she wanted to leave. She wanted to win. Not for the popularity. Not for the title. Not even for the money. She wanted to win because she had someone to save. But there was one problem. The competition wasn't as open as it appeared. The students who were usually selected had wealthy families, influential parents and connections throughout the university. Clara had none of those things. So she did something she never thought she would do. She created a fake account. A fake identity. And entered the competition. She knew it was dangerous. She knew that if anyone discovered the truth, everything could fall apart. But every time fear made her hesitate, she remembered the hospital. She remembered her nanny's voice. And she remembered the promise she had made. I'll do anything for you. She just didn't know yet that someone was already watching. CHAPTER TWO The Promise "Clara?" She looked up from her phone. Her nanny smiled weakly from the hospital bed. "What are you going to do if you don't get the money?" Clara forced a smile. "I'll find another way." "Another way?" "I'll work." Her nanny frowned. "I'll work night shifts. Scrub floors. Wait tables. I don't care." "Clara..." "I'll do anything." Her voice cracked. "Anything to make you live." Silence filled the room. Her nanny looked at her for a long moment. "Promise me you won't destroy your life trying to save mine." Clara shook her head. "I don't care." She reached for her nanny's hand. "It's about sacrificing mine for someone who already sacrificed hers for mine." Her nanny's eyes filled with tears. Clara squeezed her hand. "I would do it again." She smiled through her own tears. "And trust me. I'll make you live." CHAPTER THREE Unknown The pressure became unbearable. The competition demanded more of Clara every day. Classes. Assignments. Interviews. Practice sessions. And underneath everything was the hospital bill that kept growing. The doctors had already warned her that without payment, they might not be able to continue certain essential treatments. Clara couldn't lose. She couldn't. Not when she had already come this far. That night, she sat alone in her room, staring at her laptop. She was exhausted. Her eyes burned. Her phone vibrated. Once. Clara ignored it. Then it vibrated again. Unknown Number She opened the message. «I know who you are.» Clara froze. Her heart began beating faster. Who could know? For a moment, her mind went straight to the new transfer student. The boy who had arrived at Stanford recently. The one who seemed strangely observant. Could it be him? She typed: Who are you? The reply came almost immediately. «Someone you don't know.» Clara stared at the screen. That made no sense. If this person was someone she didn't know... How did they know her? Another message appeared. «You should be more careful about the things you leave behind.» Clara's fingers went cold. She slowly looked around her room. Nothing seemed out of place. But suddenly, everything felt different. Someone knew. Someone had discovered her secret. And Clara had no idea who.
