CHAPTER FIVE
Three Days
Clara barely slept.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the message.
I know who you really are.
By morning, she had convinced herself that she was overreacting.
Maybe it was a prank.
Maybe someone had simply guessed.
Maybe—
She stopped.
No.
Nobody could have guessed.
Her fake identity had been carefully created. She hadn't told anyone. She hadn't left anything behind that could easily connect her to it.
At least, she thought she hadn't.
Clara reached for her phone.
The conversation with the unknown number was still empty.
She opened her competition account.
Everything looked normal.
Her name was still there.
Her registration was still active.
Nothing had changed.
She exhaled.
Maybe she really was imagining things.
Then she noticed something.
Her account had been accessed at 2:17 a.m.
Clara's blood ran cold.
She hadn't been using the account at 2:17.
Someone else had.
She immediately changed her password.
Then another thought struck her.
She checked her email.
There was a security notification.
New device signed into your account.
Clara stared at the screen.
A device she didn't recognize.
Her fingers trembled.
Someone wasn't just sending her messages.
Someone had access to her information.
She quickly closed the notification.
Then her phone vibrated.
Clara froze.
Unknown Number.
A new message appeared.
«You looked nervous last night.»
Her stomach dropped.
She looked around the room.
Nobody was there.
Another message appeared.
«You should have listened.»
Clara's breathing became shallow.
She typed with trembling fingers.
What do you want?
The reply came almost instantly.
«Three days.»
Clara frowned.
Three days for what?
The typing indicator appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Then the final message arrived.
«You'll find out.»
Clara stared at the screen.
Three days.
Three days until what?
She barely noticed the sound of footsteps approaching her door.
Then came a knock.
Three slow knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Clara stopped breathing.
"Who's there?"
Silence.
She slowly moved toward the door.
Her hand reached for the handle.
Then her phone vibrated one more time.
She looked down.
A picture had been sent.
It was a photograph of her.
Taken from outside her room.
Taken only moments ago.
Clara's blood ran cold.
Someone was watching her.
And they were close.
