The Missing Student

444 Words
Amara barely slept that night. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the dark figure standing beneath the streetlight. She kept wondering who it was and how they had known where she lived. By morning, she had convinced herself that maybe she had imagined it. Maybe the rain, the darkness, and fear had made everything seem worse than it really was. She got ready for school and slipped her phone into her pocket. The messages were still there. She hadn't deleted them. At school, everything seemed normal at first. Students crowded the hallways, talking and laughing before classes began. Amara walked toward her classroom, hoping the ordinary noise would help her forget what had happened. Then she noticed something strange. Her friend, Tessa, wasn't there. Tessa was usually the first person to arrive. Amara checked her phone and sent her a message. Are you coming to school today? There was no reply. When the teacher entered the classroom, she placed her books on the desk and looked around. “Has anyone heard from Tessa?” The room became quiet. One student raised her hand. “She hasn't answered any of my messages.” The teacher frowned. “She didn't come home last night either,” another student whispered. Amara's stomach tightened. “Maybe she's with her family,” someone said. But the teacher didn't look convinced. At lunchtime, rumors had spread throughout the school. Tessa was missing. Amara stood near the corridor, staring at the crowd of students. Then her phone vibrated. Unknown Number. Her hands trembled as she opened the message. You should stop asking about her. Amara looked around immediately. Students were walking past her, talking among themselves. Another message appeared. The girl who disappeared saw something too. Amara's breathing became unsteady. Tessa had seen something? Something connected to the abandoned building? Before Amara could think, another message arrived. Tonight. Behind the old library. Come alone. She stared at the screen. Whoever was sending the messages knew about Tessa. And they knew Amara was investigating. For the first time, Amara wondered if the person she had seen near the abandoned building had followed her to school. She looked down the hallway. At the far end stood a figure watching her. The moment Amara looked directly at them, they turned and walked away. Amara ran after them. But when she reached the corner, the hallway was empty. Only one thing remained on the floor. A small black key. Amara picked it up slowly. There was a tiny number engraved on it. 17. She stared at it. She had no idea what it opened. But somehow, she knew it was connected to everything.
