THE MAN IN THE DARKNESS

1428 Words
For several seconds, Maya couldn't breathe. The silhouette at the end of the hallway stood perfectly still. Lightning flashed through the tall windows, briefly illuminating the man's face. Maya's heart stopped. It was Adrian. Or someone who looked exactly like him. Same dark hair. Same height. Same sharp jaw. Even the same gray eyes. But there was something different. The man standing in the darkness didn't look at Maya. His attention was fixed entirely on Adrian. "You've had my name long enough." Adrian's grip tightened around Maya's hand. "Alexander." The stranger smiled. Maya's stomach dropped. Alexander. The missing Kingston heir. The boy everyone claimed had disappeared fifteen years ago. The boy whose photograph she'd found hidden inside the west wing. The man standing before them was supposed to be dead. "You're alive," Adrian whispered. Alexander took a slow step forward. "Disappointed?" "No." Adrian's voice was barely audible. "Surprised." A bitter laugh escaped Alexander. "After fifteen years, that's all you have to say?" Maya looked between them. "You know each other." Alexander's eyes finally moved toward her. His expression changed. He studied her for several seconds. Then his gaze fell to the wedding ring on her finger. "So this is the wife." Maya instinctively stepped closer to Adrian. Alexander noticed. "Interesting." Adrian moved slightly in front of her. "Don't come any closer." Alexander smiled. "Still protecting everyone, little brother?" "You're not taking her." "I didn't come for her." "Then why are you here?" Alexander's smile disappeared. "I came for what belongs to me." Before Adrian could respond, the mansion lights suddenly flickered back on. Security guards rushed into the hallway. But Alexander was gone. Maya looked around in disbelief. "Where did he go?" Adrian immediately pulled out his phone. "Lock down the entire estate." The head of security nodded. "Already done, sir." "Search every room." "Yes, sir." Adrian turned to Maya. "Are you hurt?" She shook her head. "No." "Did he touch you?" "No." "Did he say anything to you?" Maya stared at him. "You called him Alexander." Adrian's expression changed. "Yes." "You knew he was alive." He didn't answer. "You knew." "Maya—" "You knew!" Her voice echoed through the hallway. "You let me believe your brother was missing when he's been alive this entire time!" "I didn't know." She stared at him. "Then how did you recognize him?" "Because I know my brother." "That's not an answer." Adrian ran a hand through his hair. "I haven't seen him in fifteen years." "But you knew it was him." "Yes." "How?" "Because there are some faces you never forget." Maya's anger faltered. For the first time, she saw the pain beneath his controlled expression. Still, she couldn't let it go. "Why did you lie to me?" "I didn't lie." "You told me your brother disappeared." "He did." "For fifteen years." "Yes." "And now he walks into our house." Adrian looked toward the darkened corridor. "Someone helped him get inside." Maya remembered the stranger at the gates. "The man I saw." "What man?" "Before the alarm yesterday. I saw someone near the gates." Adrian's expression hardened. "Why didn't you tell me?" "I did." "When?" "Before we went to the west wing." He stared at her. "I thought you were mistaken." "Well, I wasn't." Silence. Then Maya asked the question she'd been avoiding. "Why does Alexander say you've been using his name?" Adrian looked at her. "I haven't." "But he said—" "I know what he said." "Then explain it." He hesitated. "There are things about my family that you aren't ready to hear." Maya folded her arms. "Stop deciding what I'm ready for." Adrian looked at her for a long moment. Then he finally said: "My brother disappeared because someone wanted him gone." "Who?" "I don't know." "You've had fifteen years." "I was seventeen." Maya went quiet. Adrian continued. "My father was alive then. He controlled everything. The company. The family. The security. When Alexander disappeared, my father told everyone that he had run away." "Did you believe him?" "For a while." "And then?" "I found something." "What?" "A letter." "From Alexander?" Adrian nodded. "He said he was leaving because someone was trying to kill him." Maya's eyes widened. "Did you show your father?" "No." "Why?" "Because I discovered the letter hidden inside my father's desk." Maya's mind raced. "So your father knew?" "I don't know." "Where is the letter?" Adrian's expression became distant. "Destroyed." "By whom?" "My father." The answer sent another chill through her. "What happened after that?" "Three days later, Alexander disappeared." --- They moved to Adrian's study. The security team remained outside. Adrian poured himself a glass of water but didn't drink it. Maya sat across from him. "Tell me everything." He looked at her. "You really don't know when to stop." "No." A faint smile appeared. "Apparently not." He sat down. "After Alexander disappeared, my father blamed me." "For what?" "He said I should have stopped him from leaving." Maya frowned. "You were seventeen." "He didn't care." "What happened to your mother?" Adrian's expression darkened. "She died two years later." Maya immediately noticed the shift. "I'm sorry." "She never recovered from Alexander's disappearance." He stared at the floor. "She spent years believing he was alive." Maya's voice softened. "Maybe she was right." "She was." Maya looked at him. "You believe Alexander survived all these years?" "I've suspected it." "Why?" "Because every few years, someone would send me a message." "What kind of messages?" "Short ones." Adrian looked toward the window. "I'm still here." Maya's skin prickled. "Why didn't you tell anyone?" "Because the messages always came with a warning." "What warning?" "Don't trust the family." Maya slowly stood. "Does that include you?" Adrian looked at her. "I don't know." The honesty in his answer frightened her more than a lie would have. --- At midnight, Maya returned to her room. She couldn't sleep. She sat by the window, watching security guards patrol the grounds. The mansion no longer felt like a home. It felt like a fortress. A beautiful prison. Her phone vibrated. Another unknown number. Maya hesitated before opening the message. You saw him. Her heart raced. Another message appeared. Now you know the truth. Then another. But you still don't know who you're married to. Maya's fingers went cold. She typed: Who are you? The reply came almost immediately. Someone who knows what happened on July 18th. Maya stared at the screen. Tell me. Three dots appeared. Then disappeared. They appeared again. Finally, a message arrived. Ask Adrian why his identity changed that night. Maya's heart pounded. Her fingers hovered over the screen. Before she could respond, the sender sent one final message. And ask him why Alexander was the one who disappeared. The conversation ended. Maya sat frozen. Her mind returned to the newspaper clipping. Two brothers. One tragedy. A missing heir. A stolen identity. And now Alexander was alive. But there was still one question she couldn't answer. If Alexander was the original heir... Then who was the man she had married? --- The next morning, Maya woke to loud voices downstairs. She hurried out of her room. The mansion was in chaos. Security guards crowded the entrance. James stood near the staircase with a pale expression. "What happened?" Maya asked. He hesitated. "Mrs. Kingston..." "What happened?" "Mr. Kingston is missing." Her heart dropped. "What?" "He left his study early this morning." "Where did he go?" "We don't know." Maya rushed toward the study. The door was open. Papers covered the floor. One of the windows was broken. And on Adrian's desk was a single photograph. Maya picked it up. It was a picture of two boys. Adrian and Alexander. But someone had crossed out Adrian's face with black ink. Underneath it, three words had been written: HE ISN'T HIM. Maya stared at the photograph. Then she noticed something else. A small red stain marked the corner of the paper. Her heart raced. She looked toward the broken window. Then toward the empty doorway. Somewhere outside, a car engine roared to life. Maya ran toward the window. A black vehicle sped away from the estate. She couldn't see the driver. But as the car disappeared through the gates, her phone vibrated. One new message. You wanted the truth. Now come find it. Maya looked at the photograph in her hand. For the first time, she understood something terrifying. The mystery wasn't about whether Adrian Kingston was hiding a secret. The mystery was whether Adrian Kingston was even his real name. And somewhere out there, the answer was waiting.
