The mansion's alarm echoed through every corridor.
A sharp, piercing sound.
Staff members rushed from every direction, while security guards sprinted toward the front entrance with weapons drawn.
Maya stood frozen in the hallway.
Her pulse hammered against her ribs.
She had seen the man.
Someone really had entered the estate.
A hand suddenly grabbed her wrist.
"Come with me."
It was Adrian.
His calm expression was gone, replaced by complete focus.
Without waiting for a response, he led her toward the nearest staircase.
"Adrian, what's happening?"
"We have an intruder."
"I know. I saw him."
He stopped so abruptly that Maya almost collided with him.
"You saw someone?"
She nodded.
"He was standing near the gates."
"What did he look like?"
"Tall... dressed in black."
Adrian exchanged a quick glance with one of his security guards.
"Search the north gardens," he ordered.
"And lock every exit."
The guard nodded before disappearing.
---
Within minutes, the mansion had transformed into a fortress.
Steel security doors slid into place.
Every entrance was sealed.
Lights flooded the gardens.
Maya had never imagined a private home could have such advanced security.
"Does this happen often?" she asked.
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
"More often than I'd like."
The reply chilled her.
---
James appeared carrying a tablet.
"Sir."
Adrian looked up.
"Report."
"The cameras recorded someone entering through the eastern wall."
"Can you identify him?"
James hesitated.
"No."
"Why not?"
"The cameras went black for exactly forty-three seconds."
Adrian's jaw clenched.
"Someone disabled them."
James nodded.
"It appears so."
Maya frowned.
"How is that possible?"
James looked uncomfortable.
"Whoever entered the estate knew exactly where our security system was weakest."
Silence followed.
There was only one explanation.
The intruder had inside knowledge.
---
An hour later, the guards gathered in the security room.
Large monitors displayed every corner of the estate.
Most showed empty hallways.
One screen suddenly flickered.
"There!"
A guard pointed.
A shadow moved across the west wing.
Adrian immediately stood.
"Stay here."
"I'm coming with you."
"No."
"I'm not hiding while someone walks around your house."
"Our house," he corrected.
She blinked.
For a second, neither of them spoke.
Then Adrian sighed.
"Stay behind me."
---
The west wing felt different from the rest of the mansion.
The lights were dimmer.
Dust covered the antique furniture.
The air carried the faint scent of old wood and forgotten memories.
Every step echoed.
Maya noticed dozens of family portraits lining the walls.
Several had been removed, leaving only empty hooks.
"What happened here?" she whispered.
"No questions."
"You keep saying that."
"Because I don't have answers I can share."
Before Maya could argue, a loud bang echoed from upstairs.
Adrian reacted instantly.
He raced toward the staircase.
The guards followed close behind.
Maya ignored every instinct telling her to stay back.
She followed.
---
The noise had come from a locked study.
The door hung open.
Inside, books lay scattered across the floor.
A desk had been overturned.
One window stood wide open.
Cold air rushed inside.
"Sir!"
A guard pointed toward the curtains.
"They escaped."
Adrian searched the room carefully.
His eyes narrowed.
"They didn't come here to steal."
"What do you mean?" Maya asked.
He walked toward the fireplace.
One painting had been removed.
Only a rectangular patch of clean wallpaper remained.
"They were looking for something."
---
Maya knelt to pick up a photograph lying on the floor.
It showed two teenage boys.
They looked almost identical.
One was unmistakably Adrian.
The other...
She looked up.
"Who's this?"
Adrian froze.
For the first time since she'd met him...
He looked shaken.
"Where did you find that?"
"It was on the floor."
He crossed the room quickly and took the photograph from her hands.
His face had turned pale.
"You shouldn't have seen this."
The words barely left his lips before Claire appeared in the doorway.
She looked from Adrian to the photograph.
Then to Maya.
"Oh."
Her smile disappeared.
"So you've found him."
Maya frowned.
"Found who?"
Claire didn't answer.
Instead, she looked directly at Adrian.
"You should've burned every picture."
"Enough."
"It isn't enough."
Claire's voice rose.
"She deserves to know."
"Not yet."
"When?"
"When it's safe."
Claire laughed bitterly.
"Nothing about this family has ever been safe."
She turned and walked away before either of them could stop her.
---
The room fell silent.
Maya crossed her arms.
"I'm tired of everyone speaking in riddles."
Adrian looked exhausted.
"I know."
"No... you don't."
She stepped closer.
"I left my life behind."
"I married a man I barely knew."
"I moved into this mansion."
"And every single person here keeps telling me I'm in danger without explaining why."
Her voice trembled.
"So tell me one thing."
"Just one."
The room was so quiet Maya could hear the grandfather clock ticking in the hallway.
Finally, Adrian spoke.
"The man in that photograph..."
He swallowed.
"...was my brother."
Maya's eyes widened.
"You have a brother?"
"I had one."
"What happened to him?"
His expression became unreadable again.
"He disappeared."
"When?"
"Fifteen years ago."
"And no one found him?"
"No."
She hesitated.
"Was his name..."
Adrian looked directly into her eyes.
"...Alexander."
The name lingered in the room.
Maya repeated it softly.
"Alexander Kingston."
Something about it felt familiar.
As though she'd heard it before.
But where?
Before she could think further, James hurried into the study.
"Sir..."
"What is it?"
"We found this outside the estate."
He handed Adrian a sealed envelope.
On the front, written in bold black ink, were five chilling words.
HE NEVER STOPPED LOOKING FOR YOU.
Adrian stared at the envelope without opening it.
Maya's heartbeat quickened.
She didn't know who the message was for.
But one thing had become painfully clear.
The stranger who entered the mansion hadn't come to steal money.
He had come searching for someone.
And somehow...
That someone was connected to the missing brother no one was willing to talk about.
