THE LOCKED WEST WING

913 Words
The envelope remained unopened on Adrian's desk. No one spoke. The words written across the front seemed to drain the color from everyone's faces. HE NEVER STOPPED LOOKING FOR YOU. Maya watched Adrian carefully. His fingers tightened around the envelope before he quietly dismissed everyone. "Leave us." The security guards obeyed immediately. James gave Adrian a concerned look before closing the study door behind him. Now only Maya and Adrian remained. She folded her arms. "Are you going to tell me what's inside?" Adrian looked at the envelope for a long moment. "I already know." "You haven't opened it." "I don't need to." Maya frowned. "Then who sent it?" Instead of answering, Adrian carefully placed the envelope inside a desk drawer and locked it. "I'm done talking about this tonight." Maya stared at him in disbelief. "You're impossible." Without another word, she stormed out of the study. --- Back in her bedroom, Maya couldn't calm her thoughts. Every answer only led to more questions. Who was Alexander? Why had his photograph been hidden? Who had broken into the mansion? And why did everyone seem terrified of the name? She walked onto the balcony. The estate was quiet again, but she couldn't shake the feeling that someone was still watching the house. Just as she turned to go inside, she noticed a faint light flicker in the west wing. The same wing Adrian had forbidden her from entering. The light appeared for only a second. Then it disappeared. Maya frowned. "I knew it..." Someone was there. --- The next morning, Adrian had already left for the office. James informed Maya that Mr. Kingston had an emergency board meeting and wouldn't return until late evening. After breakfast, Maya wandered into the library, hoping to distract herself with a book. Instead, she found Evelyn seated by the fireplace. The elderly woman looked up with a gentle smile. "You look troubled." "I have reasons to be." Evelyn closed the book in her lap. "Curiosity can be dangerous." "So can secrets." For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Maya asked the question that had been on her mind all night. "Who is Alexander?" Evelyn's expression froze. "I can't answer that." "You know." "I do." "Please." Evelyn reached over and gently squeezed Maya's hand. "Sometimes the truth destroys more lives than the lie." With that, she stood and quietly left the library. Maya sighed. Everyone in this house spoke as though they were trapped by invisible chains. --- That afternoon, rain began to fall. Dark clouds covered the estate, and thunder rumbled in the distance. The gloomy weather matched Maya's mood perfectly. She wandered upstairs. Almost without realizing it... She found herself standing outside the west wing. The corridor was empty. No guards. No staff. Only silence. She looked around. No one. Her heartbeat quickened. She slowly reached for the brass doorknob. Locked. She tried again. Nothing. Just as she turned to leave, she noticed something unusual. One of the decorative wall lamps beside the door wasn't fixed properly. Curious, she touched it. Click. A soft mechanical sound echoed behind the wall. Maya stepped back. Part of the wooden panel beside the staircase slowly slid open. Her eyes widened. "A secret passage..." She hesitated. She remembered Adrian's warning. Never enter the west wing. She should leave. She knew she should. Instead... She stepped inside. --- The hidden passage was narrow and dimly lit. The air smelled of dust and old paper. Her footsteps echoed softly as she followed the winding corridor. After several minutes, she reached another wooden door. This one wasn't locked. She pushed it open carefully. The room beyond took her breath away. It was a child's bedroom. Untouched by time. Toy soldiers sat neatly on a shelf. Books covered the desk. A football rested in the corner. Everything looked exactly as though someone had walked out years ago and never returned. Maya slowly crossed the room. On the bedside table stood a framed photograph. A smiling woman sat between two young boys. One of them was Adrian. The other had to be Alexander. They couldn't have been more than ten years old. Maya picked up the frame. "They were so happy..." Her eyes drifted to the back of the photograph. Someone had written a date. July 18th. Beneath it were four handwritten words. Our last summer together. A chill ran down Maya's spine. --- Suddenly... She heard footsteps. Someone was coming. Her heart pounded. She quickly placed the photograph back where she'd found it. The bedroom door creaked open. Maya ducked behind a large wardrobe, holding her breath. The footsteps grew louder. A man entered the room. Not Adrian. Not James. Not anyone she'd met before. He wore a black coat and leather gloves. His face remained hidden beneath the brim of a dark cap. He walked straight to the desk and removed a small key from one of the drawers. Then he spoke in a low voice. "So... you've finally come back." Maya's breath caught. He wasn't talking to himself. He was talking to someone else. Another voice answered from the hallway. "Did she find the room?" "Not yet." The first man chuckled. "She will." "And when she does..." "...everything Adrian has been protecting will fall apart." Maya covered her mouth to stop herself from gasping. Who were these men? How did they know about her? The footsteps moved closer to the wardrobe. Closer... Closer... The wardrobe door handle slowly began to turn.
